Rig Rundown – Greta Van Fleet

Brothers Jake and Sam Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet serve up buckets of old-school, paint-peeling tone and deep riffs. Fueled by a big industry buzz, the Kiszka brothers have been logging some serious miles across the globe. During a recent two-night, sold-out stay in Nashville, Jake and Sam talked to PG’s John Bohlinger about their live setups and musical influences.

Jake Kiszka records and tours with his beloved and abused 1961 Gibson Les Paul which features two PAFs. The LP is strung with D’Addario .010s. Currently, gaff tape holds the lower bout of the guitar together.

Sam Kiszka’s favorite bass is an early ’80s Fender Precision Bass body with a Jazz Bass neck. Although between string changes during our interview (the first since he’s owned the instrument), Kiszka usually keeps it strung with D’Addario flatwound (.050–.070–.085–.105) strings.

  • Sam did very well here making the interviewer feel at home. They are playing reverse roles. The interviewer is not interested at all, he's talking over the artist, the interviewer is interested more in how he is perceived not caring about the person he's interviewing. The interviewer needs more confidence so that he can begin to do his job better.

  • I really hope these kids have better folks looking out for them than Blind Melon. Kurt Cobain, etc. Keep them from the druggie dipstick affwads creeps. I cry when these kids wind up in the Dead at 27 club.????

  • Its clear just how much these guys learned about recording in a studio at Rust Belt Studios in the first dew years.

Kudos to Rust Belt Studios and the hunger of these guys to learn as much as they could.

  • I'm liking Greta Van Fleet's music but I honestly don't care for the singing. Sorry

  • He indeed sounds like a guitar player who played heavy strings his whole life, he has improved since and it's awesome!

  • Billy Gibbons tells a story of his first meeting with B.B.King where B.B. was looking at Billy's guitar..BB noticed how firm strings were and told Billy,"Son you're working too hard… use lighter strings" (paraphrased). And from that point on, Billy has always used light strings.

  • Do their parents adopt old people? I can sing and play drums. I have a Hart Dynamics kit and a pension. They would have to move up here, though. No way I'd live the USA.

  • Love this band, I just found them today (12/29/2022). Found them by accident on YouTube. Need to correct Jake on PAF pickups though. They were made 58-61, Jake said they only made them 61 & 62. In 1962 it was actually the same pickup but they were called Patent Number Pickups.
These guys are getting some bad press which I don’t get. These guys are the Read Deal. We need REAL BANDS again instead of the Crap that’s been coming out the last 30 years. Go get ‘em guys!!!!! Love John & the Premier Guitar Rig Rundown show too!
