Rig Rundown – Heart’s Nancy Wilson, Craig Bartock, and Dan Rothchild

Premier Guitar’s Shawn Hammond met with Ann and Nancy Wilson’s guitar tech, Jeff Ousley, lead guitarist Craig Bartock, and bassist Dan Rothchild before Heart’s show at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 21, 2015. Ousley—who’s been maintaining the Wilson sisters’ gear (and making them mean cups of coffee) for more than 20 years—walked us through everything from Ann’s custom Martin acoustics to Nancy’s vintage SG and Tele, while Bartock and Rothchild shared their cool customized instruments.
One of Nancy Wilson’s coolest road guitars this time around is a ’63 Telecaster Custom with Sperzel locking tuners that she uses for “Straight On,” “Even It Up,” and some Paul McCartney covers. She also carries two Martin HD-35 Nancy Wilson signature dreads, as well as a Martin DCPA1 with a Fishman Aura system that she uses for “Alone.” All her acoustics (and Ann’s) use FU-Tone titanium bridge pins. Nancy also brings three or four Gibson Nighthawks—which she co-designed with Gibson—in various tunings. She uses an early-’90s version for Led Zeppelin covers, and an F-tuned one for Robin Trower’s “Day of the Eagle.” She’s also road-testing a new Epiphone version of the Nighthawk with a prototype Trem King cam-based vibrato. Nancy borrows Ousley’s Duesenberg semi-hollowbody (given to him by Elvis Costello), and her single-pickup, Bigsby-equipped ’68 Gibson SG is her go-to guitar for the smash hit “Barracuda.” A TV Jones Spectra Sonic is her axe of choice for Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way” and Zep’s “Misty Mountain Hop.” Both Bigsby vibratos feature Vibramate String Spoilers.
Like her pedalboard, Nancy’s amp rack resides offstage. A Peavey-era Budda Superdrive 30 II head is her main amp, and a Fender ToneMaster serves as a backup. Each head drives its own Orange 4×12 cab loaded with 30-watt Celestion speakers.
Ousley is in charge of both cable management and pedal switching for Nancy Wilson. Her offstage board starts with a Whirlwind A/B selector, an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer, a Way Huge Swollen Pickle, an ancient Ibanez flanger, and a Budda Zenman OD/Boost. A Voodoo Lab Pedal Power supplies the juice, and channel switcher pedals for each of Nancy’s heads round out the board.

Kudos to Craig for speaking from the heart (aka, the truth) about the new Vox amps. They need to do what so many (Fender and Marshall, etc.) have done and release authenticate re-creations of their classic amps that don't have an exorbitant price tag.
7:27 totally agree on the G&L. There is something akin to magic about it. IOW, it's greater than the sum of its parts. I've played and owned many Teles (but more Strats), and my ASAT is beyond most of my guitars, including my Fullerton Legacy. In fact, at this moment I'm looking at my blonde ASAT, have an SG on my lap (was putting the truss cover back on), but have my D-35 plugged into my amp as I've been playing "Keep Your Love…". Fun!

Oh I found out what was wrong with my SX someone messed around with it and stripped out all the screws on the bridge that's why it wouldn't stay in tune and I couldn't float it
I think someone was playing a trick on your cuz there's no way a strat neck could just come off like that someone would have had to loosen the bolts and you didn't notice.????????

Suggestion: Wanna have good reliable tuning stability on the Duesenberg?? As a Luthier, I just installed one of these on my customers Duesenberg"Starplayer", and it eliminated his "Staying In Tune" problem. And for the price, it can't be beat!!! Nancy will thank you, and who knows, maybe me too?? AND, it's a Direct Swap Out! String spacing is 1/16" less, but hey—? The middle one is a Seymour Duncan Duckbucker.
What a great collection of guitars! The light blue strat has what is either a Duncan JB Jr or Lil' 59 and the bridge is certainly a Duckbucker. Neck is probably an SSL-5. Love the tele with the two Duncan designed P90s. I recommend P90s in any guitar repertoire, because it's a great tone to have on tap. Duncan and DiMarzio both make outstanding P90s. The Hot P90s really kick butt.
Shame Nancy voted on the 100 greatest guitar players because she wasn't on the list. Shes top 50 for sure

I've had an epiphone nighthawk since the mid 90s when I was a kid, still have it, things not great in ways but cool also..I think the Heart chick is the only famous person I've ever heard of using them

I had a Nighthawk once. It didn't kill any of my Strats, as I sold it after about 2 weeks.
strat killer. Nothing made by Gibson has 1/10th the design features of a stat. Total turds.
The guitars are much too clean looking to me , now the bass is a real go for it instrument.
