Rig Rundown – Lucinda Williams, Stuart Mathis, and David Sutton
Article and photos: http://bit.ly/LucindaWilliamsRR
Premier Guitar caught up with Lucinda Williams’ band in the midst of their recent tour. Williams’s music blends the best of Americana and blues with nods to folk and rock. Bassist David Sutton and guitar slinger Stuart Mathis stay true to the music with a wonderful array of classic gear, while Williams’s minimalist setup reflects her rootsy songwriting approach. Williams’ stage tech Justin Bricco and Mathis give us the lowdown.
For her acoustic side, Lucinda Williams favors a recent but well-worn Gibson J-45 that sounds warmer than her other 45s. Williams plays with a heavy-handed style, so she strings up with D’Addarios gauged .013-.056.
An all-original ’72 Fender Thinline Tele Deluxe satisfies her electric jones. When fingerpicking, Williams uses a plastic thumb pick and steel fingerpicks, which is why she favors a relatively warm, dark-toned guitar.
Williams’ acoustic is simply fed to a Radial DI, and a Victoria 5112 handles her electric side. No pedals or effects are needed—just the dirt from the amp.

Love the shout out to Danny Gatton.
Stuart is a kind brother. Also a blazer in the vein of Kenny Vaughn.
So Very Cool, Thankyou. Most amazing episode. Cheers from Australia
Sweet sound
That Kay bass is nice. That is a speedbump pickup since you've never seen one? ha. Great tone.
The Victoria must have been a Ivy League 1×12
One of my favourite players. Humble as he is great.
This interviewer is unwatchable.
Stuart Mathis is a very interesting character… very unique guitarist too
Man bald dude is obnoxious.
Allow the owner/tech of instruments to handle them and hand them to you if they wish you to touch them. Seems to detract from their intrinsic value when handled without permission. Please refine interview skill to allow for artist/tech to divulge information.
Hands off the gear there Mr. Bebop; stagehand stooge
I believe that pick up is a speed bump! Could be wrong but it sure looks like one.
interviewer dude is cringey
I really dig Stuart's whole vibe..really reminds me of a visual artist…like a painter who is really in tune with his tools and art….seems like a sweetheart of a guy too.
That P-Bass is gorgeous.
This guy cant interview
Please do blake mills
If I was in the band, I’d be so peeved this random guy grabbed all my gear so casually.
thats real world wear not custom shop bullshit relicing
Stuart Mathis' performance with Jewel back then in 2001 on the song Standing Still with that National (I think) vintage guitar was epic. I remember, as guitar player too, how cool the guy was and what incredible sound and guitar arrangements he gave to the song… at least live as I don't know if he played on the record. I you like him as a guitarist just check it; there are a couple of videos here in YT of that song played live. I remember seeing him later on with The Wallflowers but the image I had on that performance live with Jewel was unforgettable. He's a great artist for sure.
Stumbled on last minute tickets to Tom Petty at the Hollywood Bowl for last night's show and Lucinda opened. Got to say even in the Nose Bleed seats Stuarts Mathis tone was killer and his playing style was very smooth and cool.
Are you guys sure that Lucinda's amp is a Victoria 5112? The 5112 is a 5F1 circuit design which doesn't have a tone knob as shown in the video. Perhaps an Ivy League or someone modified it?
I saw them for 2 shows at a really tiny place this week. For the first show, I was about 3 people back from the stage in front of Mathis. For the second show, I was up against the left side of the stage. Cool experience. Seen them a lot in bigger places, places with really acoustics, and now a really small place. I can't think of a better band. They wail. Their sound is great. I think the crowd is always a bit subdued, at least in the Boston area. They are Lucinda fans from way back and don't expect a band that plays out like they do. On the one hand, I wish I could see them in front of (I hate to say this) a Dead crowd that lets the music take them and then gives it back to the band. I want to see these guys grab the audience and then feed off the audience giving it back to them. I want to see Stuart react to crowds just going nuts as he plays.
But then again, if they jam band fans ever picked up on these guys, things would change. I think Lucinda likes playing in small, small places and if the jam band fans picked up on them, that might end.
I played in a band with Stuart years ago and can say he's one of the most humble, talented, knowledgeable and creative guitarists I've ever met, and a really nice guy to boot. I learned so much from listening and watching him. Imagine an artist that mixes his own paint and threads his own brushes, that's Stu. Watching a "label guy" lean on the neck of one of his vintage babies, I think it was a Supro, was one of my most painful moments, but with typical grace he was asked nicely to stop. So glad he's still out there making it happen and any artist would be lucky to have him in their band.
Very hard to watch with this guy. Grabbing guitars without being asked, interrupting the end of sentences, awkward. Yikes.
"I don't use too much overdrive" and has 5 dirt pedals on the board.. -_-
Nice guitars nothing specail
Found this rig rundown because I was one of the host monitor tech at the venue they played last night in Victoria, BC. Their techs were the nicest guys, and most relaxed pros out of Nashville, some of whom also go on the road with Neil Young. This venue in Vic can be a nightmare for bands. I'm talking a about a church hall with 7.2 sec of reverb decay! Yet this band was so tight, so groovy, and so spacious, everything crystal clear and massive tone… This is a show I will always remember. So grateful to have been there.
Bricko, gave me a set list in Seattle. Thanks
Real gear talk. Love it
Take off that fake beard so we can start the rundown.
That was great seeing the guitar player play the pedals as he talked about them i wish i could get more of that. Also a Lesley speaker is so not a bad idea! Might just look into that myself. Great rig rundown as per usual thanks guy!
It always amazes me that there are so many techs that have no idea what the gear is they are tech-ing. And even more so some of the guitarists not having any idea what pups are in their main axes!
I mean, maybe it's hard to keep track when you have say, more than three guitars/basses…ha!
Anyhow, I do love this series..always have:)
*This is a general statement and not necessarily pertaining to this video*
Sorry the interviewer sucks big time and I am not trying to.put on hate speech, he kept on cutting into the conversation whenever the interviewee try to make his point.
Maybe this guy had too many beer n doobs before the interview… #ontheball m/ lol
I would love plug into that wall of fenders. A SG special sounds about perfect for the job.
That's a "speed bump" pick up on the old Kay Speed Demon bass – one of Dearmond's less known, but highly regarded 1960's pick ups. The guitar "speed bumps" sell for $125 on Ebay – I have never priced a bass one.
The Rig Rundown viewers are some of the most harsh critics towards their hosts. OUCH! As far as touching other peoples instruments, in this context I think its ok but I would opt out if given the option. This dude it just trying to be funny and entertaining. I think the problem is that guitar nerds just want the goods and the info and not the "show host". People liked Dirks because she was hot and didn't say a whole lot…
'64 355 Mono…dream guitar right there. Dream guitar.
Try touchin Uncle Ted's gear without asking…he'd kick your ass
"Do you know what gauge strings she uses on this guitar?" He's her guitar tech you imbecile! Of course he knows. And can you please NOT TOUCH the instruments
It's "duh-dar-io".
It's "v-wah-la".
Justin seems like a nice guy.
I really don't like this new guy!! I want Rebecca back!!!!!
I want that guys beard
