Rig Rundown – Murder By Death

Murder by Death’s bassist Matt Armstrong managed to squeeze in a quick interview and walk us through the band’s gear before their show in Nashville. The band’s spacey-meets-gothic vibe is powered by low-tuned axes, effect-laden cellos, and a unique approach to tone.

Matt Armstrong uses several different tunings throughout a typical show. When he’s in standard tuning, he goes with a Fender Jazz bass that was purchased from the bass player in Nymb.

When the band needs to take it down a whole-step to D, Armstrong goes with this stock Epiphone Jack Casady bass that was formerly owned by Aristocrats and Dethklok bassist Bryan Beller.

For low and rumbly tones, Armstrong plays his custom Electrical Guitar Company bass, which he recently obtained after a two-year wait. This all-aluminum bass is strung with DR Low Riders (.050–.110) for E and D tunings, and a set of DR DDT strings when he dips down to C tunings.

  • I love this. Murder by Death is awesome and Matt is such a good bassist. I've seen this band live probably 3-4 times now and they are always a treat. Check them out if you've never heard of them.

  • 12's will not solve "more muddy"  10's have more punch.  12's are hip now though.

  • Just wondering: It seems that every piece of gear that I grew up with that was considered uncool, less playable, out-of-date, is now the ultra-hip thing.  Telecasters. Gretsch hollow bodies. Old Fender amps.

  • Wowwwww……I remember seeing their name up on the marquis for this shitty club in the podunk lil' college town I live in, when they came through awhile back, and I thought they were some badass thrash metal outfit, but as it turns out….they've got a fucking cello player…?? C'mon…. 😛

  • Why the fuck do people love to make fun of Perry so much? Because he isn't another blues dadrocker remaining silent the entire time?

  • Nice to see a bass player run the rig rundown for once. There's enough guitar only episodes so this partially makes up for it!

  • Welcome back to Perry's Catchphrase Bonanza!!! Today, we feature some fan favorites along with some newcomers: "Totally! Too Cool for School! Stoked! Cool! Yeah! Killer! Gotcha! Easy Peasy! Awesome!"
