Rig Rundown: Pete Thorn

Pete Thorn has constructed a dream career on being heard, not seen. He’s toured the world backing Chris Cornell, Don Henley, Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, and Japanese rock icon Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi (even performing at Mt. Fuji for over 100,000 fans on the biggest concert stage ever assembled in Japan). For a self-proclaimed “guitar nerd” (check out Pete’s 2011 album under the same name), it was a 21st century guitarist’s goal. After that, what does one do in between tours to stay busy and relevant in a modern world? You become a beloved YouTuber, of course!

His channel (@PeteThorn) is a great destination for gear demos and comparisons, but Pete’s content stands out with his simple, and east-to-apply tone tips. (It’s worth noting that Pete did this very thing inside Premier Guitar for years with his “Tone Tips” column. Check it out!) The fun, diverse, informative videos Thorn has delivered have blossomed into a parallel profession with a built-in audience pushing 250k subscribers.

While PG was on the road in SoCal, Thorn graciously invited Chris Kies into his Hollywood-based recording sanctuary, where his YouTube channel takes form. The hour-long chat covers Thorn’s signature Suhr gear (guitars, amps, and humbuckers), he shows how his setup can switch between eight tube amps in a flash (only outdone by his ability to interchange cabs, mics, and speakers in a snap), and we dive deep into Pete’s primary pedalboard.

  • It's funny. Most people idolize the known guitar heroes (and I include myself). Hendrix, Page, Beck, Clapton, EVH, Vai, etc…but after watching a ton of Pete (and seeing him when he toured with Chris Cornell) he is squarely in my Guitar Hero Pantheon even though he refers to himself as a "sideman". He and Tim Pierce, two of the nicest guitarists who I'm glad are having their moments thanks to the internet era.

  • Man, every time I hear Pete's Ibanez Destroyer, I want one!!! I usually go straight to Reverb and see they're going (app) in the $6-$8K range, and my excitement dies off pretty quick!! lol

  • I just discovered Pete Thorn today. What a great early Christmas present. Mind blowing player and unbelievably kind in every way. I've got to see him live someday. ????

  • Terrific rundown! Here is a strange question for anyone: “Does anybody know what model of chair Pete is sitting on?” My husband is really intrigued by it. Thank you!

  • Nobody like Pete Thorn. If I could hang with Pete and Andy Wood, I'd be a happy guy. To of the greatest.

  • Nice guy, with a lot of knowledge!
I’m just your average bassplayer from the Netherlands, but this guy’s personality, playing tone and vibe inspires me.

  • The guitar Pete's talking about (the one used to model the neck for his new signature Standard) was as custom Classic S with a Brazilian board.

When you spend that kind of money and wait that kind of time for a guitar and it isn't exactly what you've ordered, it's well within your right to turn it down. Interviewer is totally off-base by suggesting you just live with it. Even more than that, John Suhr would never expect the customer to just take it.

  • Pete, love your channel. Been watching for a while now. It just dawned on me that your voice has a very Harrison Ford sound/vibe. If you ever get the opportunity to do voice over work, I suggest some H.F. Star Wars stuff. Carry on brother.

  • His Thornbuckers are so versatile. I’ve got a couple Suhr’s, one with the dual Thornbuckers. The the taps are so usable as opposed to many other pickups. Very easy to tone shape.

  • Loved this video. I really want to know what kind of chair Pete is sitting on, looks comfortable and easy to play guitar on.

  • Especially loved hearing Pete cycle through his different amps fairly quickly, cabs and cab emulations too. Great to hear them A/B'd like that, a quick little bite sized snack demo. Reiterates an obvious truth – I, too, love Marshall circuits, lol!

  • I could listen to Pete talk gear for hours. In fact, I have. Would love to meet and jam with him.

  • I use 8 gauge strings on everything from Les Paul's to Strats to RG. It just feels good to me.

  • Guyz, I always love your rrd, the choice of artists, the formula, the questions and so on since I discovered you here (maybe ten years!?!? More?!?? I don't know) but… Why audio quality of your videos gone bad?!?? So downgrade!!! It's a surprise for me… You take a lot of care of it… Anyway… Pete is great!! But please… Thank you.!

  • Pete Thorn is the MAN! His playing is so inspiring and motivated me to keep working. I'll never get there but lofty goals are never a bad thing

  • Pete seems like such a nice guy man- he's always very down to earth, seems very approachable- and yet he's one of the best guitarists I've ever heard play. I see him on the same level as Tim Pierce- and if you don't know who that is, wtf is wrong with you? Both of them should've been out front imo- not backing someone else up.

Edit: Oh wow, he even mentions Tim in the interview- I didn't know if they knew one another or not. Makes sense that they would though.

  • Pete constantly blows me away – when he started playing the Ibanez Destroyer – he sounded Bang On. Van Helen!
