Rig Rundown – Peter Frampton

Article and photos: http://bit.ly/PeterFramptonRR

Guitar icon Peter Frampton invites Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger to his Nashville rehearsal studio to talk and demonstrate his sprawling live setup.

The “Phenix” is Frampton’s famous, modified 1954 Les Paul Custom from the cover of Frampton Comes Alive. The name refers to the mythical bird that was raised from the ashes. This guitar, thought to be destroyed and lost for over 30 years—even surviving a plane crash in Venezuela—recently found its way back home to Frampton. To commemorate this historic guitar, Gibson has recreated a very small, exclusive run of reproductions with every burn, scratch, ding, and crack faithfully copied to match Frampton’s original.

This 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard previously belonged to famed songwriter JJ Cale and is affectionately named “Paulina.” With the exception of the bridge and tuning keys, it’s completely original. The original bridge was so badly worn that accurately intonating the instrument was impossible. It was replaced by a relic’d TonePro bridge to keep the guitar aesthetically correct.

  • Cool thing about Frampton, like Miles Davis, all the leads are improvised, never to be played exactly the same way again live. It just so happens that the ones from one recording are etched in our heads.

  • I love how Peter didn't trash anything that didn't work for HIM. I guess with his enquiring mind he knows that he should try everything there is to see what he DOES gel with, knowing that not everything WILL but that's just a mismatch and not an inherrent fault. Maybe he approaches people in the exact same way.

My favourite moment has to be when he coyly attempted to forgive his rig size by swiveling like Betty Boop and declaring that his car was small though. ????

  • Used that MXR Phase 90 on Lines on My Face. "Lines on My Face" reminds me of The Eagles. Don Felder would tell Joe Walsh (and vice-versa) that he was "showing" (aka Lines on HIS Face). (actually it was 'residue from lines' that would be on his face) lol. Those were the days …. large bowls of white powder that musicians would bury their faces in. Then they'd need at least one or more "714" so they could crash. Otherwise, they'd be up all night! I think Steve Lukather told a story where they ran out and had to snort residue that had fallen onto the studio mixing board.

  • that many "LUTHIERS" and the bridge isn't drilled in the right place. OK.. move that bass side back 1/8" and raise the damned thing up a few mm.

  • I love the musicians willing to show their equipment off themselves as opposed to getting an roadie to do it. In most of these rig rundowns the roadies don't seem to know all that much about the equipment they're charged with looking after…Can't tell you how many times I've heard John ask a roadie a particular question, and the roadie says "I don't know what's in it, or I don't…"….

  • when it comes to gear I'm definitely living in the past, but unless they do different versions of a song I would literally have a computer kick in any effect pre-set for each and every song so all I would have to do is just play the freaking note I'm sure the technology is out there, I was a musician for many years, but I never got so extensive in my gear selection , so I guess my point is it takes a lot of freaking work to remember what effect at one point of the song and naturally which song????

  • Peter Frampton I know what it means to have my guitar stolen. I had a 2001 American strat that my mom had to die for to give it to me. (Used insurance money to buy this guitar ) hey man named Angela Hayden from downtown Cincinnati Ohio stole my guitar and the police I guess didn't believe me cuz I'm handicap a cerebral palsy, but it was mine and I played it fairly well despite my circumstances. I'm still pissed off about it and it's 2022. The cops laughed at me or should I say Cincinnati police. They had them a rip roaring laugh.
