**Robert Trujillo** is a highly skilled bassist best known for his work with **Metallica**, where he became a member in 2003. Known for his powerful, slapping bass style and incredible stage presence, Trujillo has brought a unique flair to Metallica’s sound while respecting the band’s legacy. His career has spanned several notable bands, including **Suicidal Tendencies** and **Ozzy Osbourne’s band**, making him a revered figure in the metal and rock scenes.
### Key Points in Robert Trujillo’s Career
1. **Suicidal Tendencies (1989–1995)**:
– Trujillo joined the Los Angeles punk and thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, where he showcased his ability to mix funk with metal. He became known for his “finger slap” technique, inspired by bassists like Jaco Pastorius, and added an unmistakable energy to the band’s sound, particularly in albums like *Lights…Camera…Revolution!*.
2. **Infectious Grooves and Other Projects (1991–1995)**:
– Alongside Suicidal Tendencies’ frontman Mike Muir, Trujillo formed **Infectious Grooves**, a funk-metal band that emphasized his versatile bass skills. Infectious Grooves allowed him to expand creatively, combining funk, metal, and humor. He also worked on a range of other projects, playing for bands such as Black Label Society and Mass Mental.
3. **Working with Ozzy Osbourne (1996–2003)**:
– Trujillo joined Ozzy Osbourne’s band as a full-time bassist and gained wider recognition for his skill. His powerful performance style and chemistry with Osbourne solidified his reputation as a bassist capable of performing at the highest level.
4. **Joining Metallica (2003–Present)**:
– Trujillo’s biggest career move came when he was asked to join Metallica following the departure of Jason Newsted. His audition impressed the band, leading to his official inclusion, and he received a $1 million advance upon joining. Trujillo brought a new level of technical ability and creativity to Metallica, which is especially evident in songs like *“All Nightmare Long”* and *“Suicide & Redemption”* from the *Death Magnetic* album.
5. **Documentary Work and Personal Projects**:
– Trujillo produced *Jaco*, a documentary about legendary jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius, one of his primary influences. The film, released in 2015, explored the life and impact of Pastorius and won praise in the music community. Trujillo continues to participate in projects outside of Metallica, though the band remains his primary focus.
### Playing Style and Influence
– **Bass Technique**:
– Trujillo is known for his unique blend of slap bass, fingerstyle, and pick playing. His athletic approach to the bass, combined with a heavy tone, brings an aggressive yet groovy feel to his playing.
– **Stage Presence**:
– Known for his intense, almost athletic stage presence, Trujillo often performs with a low-slung bass and moves energetically across the stage, often squatting or crouching as he plays. His onstage charisma is a huge part of Metallica’s live appeal.
With his extensive experience and adaptable style, Robert Trujillo has left an indelible mark on the world of rock and metal bass playing. His contributions have redefined Metallica’s sound in recent years, making him one of the most respected bassists in the industry.

He the Right Man
And the rest is history my friends
Goats playing instruments
I like Rob, but never felt he fit in Metallica. No different than Janick Gers in Maiden.
Lar's hair receeded another 2 inches at the power of robs bass playing ????
Yeah
Tell me.. am I the only one that thinks this sounds like a bunch of high school kids making a bunch of obnoxious noise or what??????
Lars is like "ill do my signature play out of time toward the end and see if it throws him off"
When James looked up, he just remembered to Cliff????????????????
I saw a Marshall head.
All was nice later the bullys like the little Ulrich on a tuning room on 2010 i think so this guys are too toxic they act ,even Kirk get ignored many times and the reason why he's still on the band because if Metallica find another lead guitar player like Steve Vai or Zakk Wylde James must be worried on be ignored on the solos .
Jason Newsted was the real bass player they hired Trujillo because he played like Cliff .
Such a great band. METALLICA FOREVER ????????
Including hangover too.
Rob ROCKS
James was really messed up with the look here for sure…
Without Newsted Metallica is not the same anymore
Well I do suppose that if your tryin out for the band,,probably knows all your songs Lars.lol❤
Rob and the band looked so relaxed considering it’s an audition. They meant to be
A day of YEaAaHhh! for everyone. But if lars approves of you, You're In ????????
Jason is the best for Metallica
Lars was snowed to the moon that day!
I love that Twiggy’s bass is out of tune…and he doesn’t seem to notice. It tracks.
