“Rocking the Rhythm”- How I Wrote My First Book – “New Orleans Funk Guitar!”

During my career I’ve been blessed to work with a “who’s who” of all the New Orleans greats including The Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, all the members of The Meters and more. The result of this experience was put into my first book “New Orleans Funk Guitar Styles” still in print 25 years later! Here’s a story and little history on how it all came to be.

  • All my favorite guitar players are deadly at rhythm playing. Solos are great and all, but rhythm is what moves the entire song.

  • Isn't this you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IOkw6MLFVo That video influenced my playing so much — just perfect strat tone and groove — loved the intro and the fills toward the end. Glad you're ramping your channel back up — you're right up there with Guthrie and Uncle Larry in terms of high quality content and talent. Thanks!

  • A friend gave me a copy with the disc still in it. Were you friends with Eddie Freche? I think he played with the Nevilles before you did. My Dad always talks about when the Nevilles stole Eddie from the Nobles ????

  • Still love you and your playing after all these years, Shane! This book is totally badass! That magazine article turned me onto you and the highway 90 album. I collected soundboard recordings of The Neville Bros just to hear you play.

  • Very interesting video! I love NOLA! The book you found and this book you wrote is a treasure! You should write another book! You were at the right place at the right time with these musicians. You should be very proud. God bless!

  • Caught many Neville’s shows in 80’s & 90’s and was amazed by your playing, Shane, and that you were the white kid in the band made a huge impression. Looking forward to following your channel! ????????

  • Back in my university days in Montreal (mid 2000s), my teacher made me practice a lot of stuff from that book. I even transcribed the introduction jam. I now teach at a college with that same teacher now being a colleague and we both use that book every now and then! Great stuff.

  • I have it, and it took my understanding of rhythm up a notch.

Given what you’ve been up to since your time with the Neville Brothers, I’d bet you have enough for at least one darn interesting memoir/history style book.

And…. very glad to hear you're going to be posting. I just turned my notifications on!
