Today we are going to learn how to play “Honky Tonk Women” by the Rolling Stones. The rhythm section of this song is Keith on rhythm guitar with Mick Taylor filling in some licks and fills. Bill Wyman on bass and Charlie Watts on drums. At its core the harmony is very simple, it is just 4 basic chords used throughout but the open tuning that Keith Richards used lends itself to some very nice suspended sounds. To capture them as close to the record you would need a baritone ukulele tuned D G B D treating the G as the root, but we can emulate some of that flavor by using the suspended C chord as well as the suspended A chord.

The song consists of an intro riff
Verse
Chorus

The solo fallows the structure of the verse without the suspended sounds.

Ironically Mick and Keith wrote this song while in vacation in Brasil (In Brasil they don’t right it with a Z, but rather an S and I think proper nouns shouldn’t be translated, a hot take on linguistics haha) they were in the country side of the country, not the big city, there is a strong cowboy culture down there. They don’t call them cowboys of course, the word is caipiras, spefically referring to rural people from the south central part of the nation. While there the two of them developed this idea.
