Secret PRS Coil-Split Mod | Guitar Tech Tips | Ep. 67 | Thomann

Even though splitting the coils of a humbucker makes it more versatile, there are some issues with it.
Most humbuckers will sound very thin and quiet if you disable one of the coils for a single-coil sound.
Let me show you PRS’s awesome trick to avoid all of that.

  • Interesting Mod. Does the PRS resistor method of splitting the coil retain the normal "hum-cancelling" property of a Humbucker, or is that compromised to any degree?

  • On my guitars with humbuckers i am using parallel /series toggle for that. I do not like split coil tone at all – it has no that single benefits like a full and sparkling tone but has single coil penalties as noisy signal and big drop of volume.
Parallel mode makes noiseless and chimy tone without big drop of volume and it's reduced signal level is suitable for clean and fuzz. For me it sounds way better than split coil.

  • I imagine that this would be the way to go if youโ€™re running all humbuckers. But if youโ€™re splitting a humbucker to match with a single coil, then I would think you really do want a bit of drop in volume ????โ€โ™‚๏ธ

  • Why not use a pot to fade out one of the coils? Then you could have an infinite amount of different 'resistors' in the circuit.

  • How do you use this mod in an hss strat. I particularly want the split tone in position #2 to get this set up. I'm not using a push pull pot but simply want this effect of the humbucker in position #2.

  • Duuuuude this is the exact kinda thing I was looking for with my new cool guitar that just drops too much with the coil split to be useful in band context probably.
Am definitely trying something like this soon <3

  • I had been thinking of putting independent splits.for a Duncan sh2 and sh4 on so I could basically use the independent volume controls to dial in a.custom blend with a little bridge humbucker mixed with a single coil neck sh2 sound. Basically to get a slightly fuller single coil tone…with this mod I wonder if that is already accomplished because the other coil is only partially muted. I see you have only one volume pot anyway but hypothetically,.do you think it would be overkill to mix in a little bridge humbucker tone? Say, 7.5 volume on the split neck and 2.5 on the unsplit bridge or something similar?

  • You can also put a potentiometer in between the coil and the ground so you can choose the amount of signal you're actually putting to ground.

  • Chris, Great instructional video, as usual. I always enjoy dropping by and learning something new!. I have a PRS SE STANDARD SANTA. I swapped out the pickups for a PRS SE 85/15S set. I experimented and found that a 2.2k resistor on the neck PU was perfect. I leave the bridge PU with no resistor. Cheers!

  • Great Job! Love your channel!
    Question
Will the resistors installed for the coil tap affect the tone of the full humbucker pickups?

  • Hi, i tried this with my new Roswell LAF pickups and it works flawlessly, but i got another problem.
When the pickups are split i get the hum with switch in middle positon, is there any way to solve this?

  • Hi Kris! Thank you very much for your vids! I apologize for the late question but could you help? On my PRS SE I've noticed that when splitting, the screw coil sounds much quieter so looks like it's grounds over resistor. In my mind, it should work exactly the opposite – the inner coil should be grounded. Am I wrong?

  • I have a Charvel DK24 that is the budget Guthrie model and one of the things it lacks is the coil split toggle switch for the 2 humbuckers. Would this be how they achieve it do you think?

    Reply
  • So they are not split itโ€™s still a humbucker with a resistor in series.

  • Hey, we're over here! Quit looking over there! There's nobody there! LOL!
The "after" sound of the tapped pickups is far superior than the old usual way, without a doubt. I'm putting that in my friend's PRS SE Standard 24, which I already had to fix and does not have that. Thanks!

  • I want to use a potentiometer to partial coil-split, so it will be variable the amount of the second coil. What would be the best value to you? Or ball park?

  • I've always wondered how PRS does that, now I know. I wish I'd seen this earlier… I'm gonna go try it. Thanks for the video!

  • Does the resister effect the humbucker's output when it is in series? The humbucker in series after adding the resister seemed a little quieter.
