Should You Believe the Hype? Yamaha THR30II Amplifier Review
This is my review of the Yamaha THR30II electric guitar amplifier. The Yamaha THR30II is a wireless desktop guitar amp designed for practice. This is a perfect amplifier for low-volume jamming and practice.

How do you connect this THR guitar amp into a battery operated PA system; eg EV8 or S1? Do you need a middle man like a mixer or pre-amp device when plugging this amp Into the battery PA boxes. I know just going direct will result in terrible sound quality.
You still have the charvel????
Semi driver and getting this for the road. Perfect for travel
Does the app work on an Android phone?
I own the thr10c and wanted the new thr30iiW for travel because the 10 first gen I own doesn’t have the heavier amp sounds. It sounds better and is so convenient to have added the line6 wireless. Just great to grab and go. Sounds amazing. Have a spark 40 and it just doesn’t sound how it should. Muddy and bassy The thr is so easy to dial in a spectacular tone.
To anyone that doesnt like their Yahama amp in the video. Please feel free to send it to me
Big props for the Miami Connection poster!
I do love classic small valve amps, but boy, these desktop amps are so practical and full featured, you can't go wrong with them.
The only tone I wanted to check out was Tremolo,,, And you didn't show it!
This amp family was released in 2012 so its 12 years old now. Hopefully Yamaha will update it to include a lopper and digital audio out at some point.
That lead sound…it seemed too thin. Just like the old THR10X I used to have. Sold it in search of a better sounding Hard Rock distortion
Tried one of these out in a store a few weeks ago and REALLY dug it in the room. Glad to know it records well, too!
will this amp work with pedals?
I own it and absolutely love it. Always Great reviews mate ????
The next iteration of this amp should include a way to hook up a drum machine to it,.
What mic is that? Sounds better than my old SM57
I bought one about a week ago. Instantly intuitive, great sounds. I did find that the 5 presets sound very effects bypass-like. Very straight into amp tone. Once you get into the channel selection, even without effects, still sounded “enhanced.” The 5 presets sounded more amp like to my ears. Processed sounds are great, but there are times I want to actually hear what my pickups sound like organically. I love that I get both in the Yamaha, which was what I thought was lacking in the Spark 40. The Spark 40 lacked dynamics, and delayed responsiveness. That was even with the compressor turned off. Felt like my guitar was lip-syncing. Love everything about this Yamaha. Worth the money, and I opted for the Line6 transmitter. Again, worth the extra cost to be wireless.
Does it take pedals well?
THR 30ii user on my Ibanez JS1200 here. Great amp. I hope they will make a headphone amp version on this much like the Fender Mustang Micro. Yamaha modeling is just sound close to the real tube amps. Sometimes you just wanted simple and minimalistic. And probably add a drum and looper next time..
Had a SPARK40…. Did not like it… bought the THR30II and i love it????
Can someone please tell me how to turn off the orange LED lights behind the main grill, I had it done before, and after the latest update they came on again, doesn't seem to be in the manual
I keep considering this practice amp. The issues I see are: 1) There are numerous reports the transmitter is terrible. 2) If I want to go from rhythm or crunch to lead, this simply won't work—as there is no spillover; and if a wireless bluetooth pedal is incorporated a bluetooth mobile device won't work simultaneously.
I just got the 10 II version, and it's amazing! I agree about the low end, it can be a little bottom heavy. Using the app is a must with this thing, plus it opens up a whole new level of tone shaping.
Be sure to upgrade your firmware as soon as you can when you get it!!
I have the original THR10C, and it's not going anywhere. I use it to play music from my phone, plus the amp models it come with.
Yamaha makes some amazing stuff for sure. It pairs GREAT with my Yamaha Pacifica, but that's no surprise lol.
Best guitar gear ever. Sold all my other amps and modelers. Line out is great for gigs!!
Does it have delay and chorus?
According to all the reviews, this unit has an output of 15W with batteries and 30W with the power supply. Shall I experience a volume drop when I unplug the power supply? I hear no difference with my unit.
I can honestly say that the thr30ii is one of the best pieces of guitar gear I have ever bought. The AMAZING tones it provides had me playing guitar a lot more. I have recorded and I have gigged with it through PA systems and it always sounds incredible and it’s super reliable. It’s just a magic piece of gear.
reasons to avoid :it looks like crap, its stereo
It seems that most guitarist have a way to long neck on their guitar, they only use the part closest to the body… shame really…
I’ve had the THR10, the THR100HD and currently own the THR30ii. It’s a whole hub for guitar, acoustic and bass practice, I take it everywhere. This and my iPad it’s the best combo, there’s access to the amp editor, YouTube lessons through the speakers and also Moises backing tracks, it’s gold. Currently I play it with studio monitors cause it sounds much better, it’s a portable speaker for music as well, can’t recommend it anymore.
Cool Sound !!!????
Very informative video , I'm thinking of buying one, but I can't find one piece of info about it .
How long can the delay time be set to and what control over repeats is there ?
The sound is actually even better than your demo here. The amp is stereo and you only have the mic on one speaker so you’re not getting the true stereo spread. It really fills the room and is LOUD ????
have had a couple but i've had the thr30ii for a couple of years now, never misses a beat, wireless is great, battery lasts ages, and some of the custom tones are really pretty amazing, from clean strat to heavy tones, perfect all round home and lounge room jam amp
What the THR 30 gives you that many other "desktop modeling" practice amps don't, is stereo line out options. To me this is a plus in that you can run the amp into the PA front of house or to a couple of powered cabinets and use it for live venues. The spark may have more of a library of effects and options for where those effects stack in your signal chain, but it does not have line outs allowing you to use the amp as a head unit to slaved powered cabinets.
As to the difference in cost between the THR 30 and others like the Katana 50, Spark 40, and the Nux is that Yamaha makes very high quality gear with exceptional quality voicing, and does not bloat the amp with so many digital recreations that are only mediocre. You get professional build and sound quality that reacts to artist input the way that rack or stacks style systems do.
To me a plethora of options is great in theory but if the options are only mediocre quality what's the point? You can get studio worthy sounds out of the THR which IMO makes the extra cost worth it. Dial in your sound at home, save it, pack up your guitar and amp, and then go to the studio and lay down those same sounds without having to worry about trying to replicate it using a different rig.
Please do not take this as a diss on other desktop amps or modeling units because I have used Katana and Spark amps to broaden my creativity and reinvigorate my song writing; I am merely saying that if you want professional quality in such a styled platform, IMO, the THR is more suitable to such a challenge as an all in one compact combo.
Nice review!
Is the jam track available for purchase/download somewhere?
Thanks!
Nice amplifier, but waay to expensive…
its a good amp. But to be honest youtube videos are all Mic'd demonstrations just like most amp demos. So it wont sound anywhere near like it does in a youtube video. It's a small box so it will always sound like a small box. This, even when cranked all the way up.
That speaker distortion is a big no-no for me.
