“Slap Bass”… 2 Great Exercises To Get You Started!

Ok, I think you’ll be in agreement… Slap bass is simply one of the coolest and funkiest techniques you can use on bass!

Unfortunately for many players it’s really hard just to get up and running with this technique and much of this is down to the movement of their slapping arm. More likely than not they’re using too much forearm movement and not enough forearm rotation, which is what I believe is the best and easiest way to get that snappy slap sound you associate with bass players such as Larry Graham and Marcus Miller.

In this lesson I’m going to focus on movement and take you through two great plucking hand exercises will help you get the correct fluidity of movement you’ll need to start creating and playing great slap bass lines.

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott 🙂

  • Hey Scott what are you playing in this video mate? Its such a nice looking Bass. Has a Pbass look to it kinda, Love LOVE that natural wood grain with the black guard.

  • I keep opting to do thumping instead of slap with the thumb because its hard to hit the one string you aim for. Is that something i need to avoid so it doesnt become a bad habit, or is that just personal preference?

  • Dear bass community…

Either get a guitarist to teach us how to play bass…

    Or do the following.

    1. Teach basics.
    2. Upload tabliture to all the songs in the world for bass just like guitar does.
    3. Teach us techniques.
    4. Teach us how and why the bass differs from guitar and the big fat difference between a bass player playing bass and guitarist playing bass.

I feel that the bass community is shrowded in darkness and mystery and makes it very hard to access good solid learning material which makes it really hard to learn how to play bass….

Especially when bass players tend to indulge themselves in very bass oriented styles when one wants to learn metal bass and not just playing along with the rythum section for lack of a better understanding.

I want to learn my bass as an independent instrument, not as a side b to my guitar.

I want to know how and why and when I should be moving up and down the fret board and dont give me "because it sounds cool"

Because as a professional musician who is familiar with guitar and drums, I find it agravating how amature and basic my bass playing is as opposed to the bass player from AFI. Or the bass player from Black Veil Brides, or even Max Green from Escape the Fate….

If Chris Lipe can teach vocals.
And Glen at spectrum sound can teach mixing mastering and among other things.

Than someone has to step up and teach all the useless bass players that bass is more than a dusty throw rug that gets stepped all over and dismissed as an entry level instrument for tallentless losers…

I have seen people shred on bass…

So I want the basics and the principals and the foundations I can work on in order to get from point A to Point Z in the most accessable way that is professional to the point and cut the long winded explanations and inspirations….

I find it even difficult to find solid learning material in GUITAR CENTER for bass….

    Its annoying…

Drums, I found all kinds of learning materials.

    Guitar same….

    But for Bass and Vocals….

That has always been a problem…

And as for vocals…. we now have Chris Lipe to thank for making lessons more accessable.

So bass community needs a bass version of Chris Lipe….

  • New bassist here, looking for a headless, 3/4 scale, passive bass. Any recommendations if they even exist? Cheers

  • Scott Devine’s SBL course is a total waste of money for a beginner.
He is a show off who loves the sound of his own voice.
I wasted $400AUD on his course, so you if you’re a beginner save your money.
    He’s a shocker!

  • Holy moly! Was wondering why I was absolutely not getting a proper SLAP out of my bass all the time, until 3:28 ! This has opened my eyes! Thanks a ton!
My action is rubbish… but then again, I'm still pretty much of a noob lol

  • Is there a different technique to slapping with a jazz bass guitar with two pick ups? All I have is a Roland practice amp and a jazz bass. Is that why my slapping sounds stshitty, or is it just me? I hear a lot of clicking with the strings against the fretboard.

  • I'm scared i might break my strings when i pop. also when i slap it just makes a rackety sound against the frets. am i possibly not slapping hard enough?
