  • Never heard of Texas toast. I’m ordering one. That’s the most exciting guitar I’ve seen in a looong time.

  • Can a human not hear the difference resulting from the relative position of a pole through a magnet? If a "dogear" style p-90 has one adjustment eliminated can it truly be identical to a non dog-ear? I have several guitars with at least one p-90but, no dog-ear (as yet).

  • I replaced the factory dogears on Epi Casino with Lollar dogear P90 pickups. Upgraded the pots and my Casino sounds like a really expensive guitar.

  • Those P90’s without ears mess with my feng- shui . The extra screws make me nauseous. I paint the mounting screws to match the pickup , it helps.

  • Thanks for this video, Dylan.

I have noticed that guitars seem much less experimental with form factor/pickup coil geometry and and placement than basses.

If you haven't done so already, could you please do a future video comparing different bass pickup form factors/coil geometries (P, J, soapbar, MM, etc.) so we can get a sense of what they sound like?

For example, 5 string soapbar basses seem to be very common now. Instead of bass builders trying to make a PJ 5 string bass, many pickup manufacturers will try to fit PJ style coils into a soapbar housing. I think this is a compromise.

My opinion is the soapbar trend in basses is more for manufacturing convenience, and I am not convinced a soapbar bass emulating a PJ bass sounds like a real PJ. The P coils have to be contained in a smaller soapbar housing, meaning they will sense the string at different points relative to the real P. You also don't often get the option of P vs. reverse P stagger in a soapbar.

The soapbar J also has issues about whether it is a humbucker emulating a single coil, stacked vs. side by side design, etc. I'm something of a purist and tend not to like hum canceling designs of single coil pickups, as to my ear they are less bright/articulate, are less dynamic, and flatten transients. I see their usefulness in live situations, though.

For those of us who like 5 and 6 string basses, it seems like everything is being forced on us as a soapbar, some even with four-six conductors plus ground.

It would make for a very flexible bass, but I would think differing coil sounds coming from a single soapbar would be mediocre compared to the real basses they are trying to emulate. The wiring could also get very complex. It seems like a lot of trouble for limited payoff.

I'm aware soapbars can sound like anything as they are just a form factor, but I hear them on mass produced rock and metal basses as generally mid scooped.

For those of us who want something a little more mid forward, I like a true PJ, but the problem is finding 5 and 6 string basses that are built for PJ pickups and not soapbars.

I'm wondering if it's worth it to try to track down a bass with the form factor I want and skipping the soapbar emulations.

    Thanks.

  • Hi there!
I have a technical question if you want to make a vid about this topic…
What about a tele with a jazzbass configuración (no switch, 2 vol 1 tone)?
Two humbuckers, i like to play on the neck adding bridge volume to my taste
I havent found info about guitars with jazzbass configuration
    Thanx..

  • Good video on P90s.I have a singlecut Les Paul Special with 2 P100s.Are P100s just 2 mirror image P90s sharing the magnets between them?

  • Got both…love both …but my current production models use soap-bar P90's because I switched to a Hipshot string-through bridge design for all the models, which means the pickups have to be able to recess into the body more than a dog ear would allow…I love P90's, thanks to you ! They're my favourite pickup to make….and my favourite to play as well. That box of pickups is calling your name..hahaha. Cheers brother !

  • Funny how when he was discussing dog ears the pooch in the background seemed to perk up and play more. ???? great video Dylan!

  • I have an Epi with soapbars, never owned dogears, but have played them.
Almost bought a.hollowbody with dogears, but tricky to do soapbars on that one

  • And yet you can find people online who insist there is more of a difference and it doesn’t matter what sources you use, they will not believe you.
I think some just assume a difference in sound, and some heard a dogear that was wound quite differently than a soapbar, or there were other things in the signal path.

But the truth is in this video.
