  • This looks and sounds great! I'm sure the Ibanez basses are great too, excellent sustain, growl, and playability. I however went with the Yamaha BB234. I get all the others features but have decided against the 9v battery pre- amp because I don't want to deal with it during live performances at large venues. It's a distraction. Is the battery fresh enough? Did I buy and bring at least two replacement batteries? Will it crap out on me in the middle of a performance? Etc,etc. All pick ups are passive at their core anyway. The Yamaha has a full 34" scale it does have medium frets and a tapered neck but these features just make it easier and faster to play. I'm 57 and needed a bass to weigh less than 10 pounds. My bass weighs 9 lbs. 3 ounces so I'm happy. The Jaguar, Ibanez, are fine basses, I'm just laying down why I choose the Yamaha BB234.

  • Thanks for the review, I know that you are a SX fan and I hesitate between the short scale version of this jaguar and a SX pbass short scale, I know that you have the jazz bass one so what do you think about it ? Which one is well made ?

  • Currently I have one almost identical to yours…and prefer it to my Warwick Custom shop Streamer!
Seriously. It is a very fine bass, great tone and that almost typical Jazz Bass sound, with a touch of P-Bass in there too.
The active boost I tend to ignore, but it has its uses.
Class bass, and thanks for the hands on review.

  • I just bought one of these at a cool 170 brand new in a store called Ernie Williamson and it plays like a charm. The action is perfect for the scale.

  • Earl, I've had 2 (still have one) of the "basic" SS models after falling in love with the insanely EZ playability of the shorter necks. The 2 basses are different as night & day, even though they are identical right down to color (coincidence, I didn't choose, bass #1 was a factory 2nd with NOTHING wrong with it LOL, and #2 was used). First of all, bass 1 was much heavier and had much hotter pups). Jag 2 was used but setup real nice with real low action. I couldn't get the action on Jag 2 close because of fret buzz. I bought 2 because I stringed Jag 1 BEAD. Even before I changed the strings, I had to turn the volume down when switching from one bass to the other. Jag 1 (which I still have) is about 3-4 years old, and I'm not sure how old #2 since it's used. So I'm wondering if Squier upgraded the pups 3-4 years ago, and also if they started using heavier wood, or sometimes just use what's available (supposedly agathis). I don't think the heavier body has anything to do with loudness or sustain LOL. I also mentioned that #2 had a better neck, indicating that quality control may be an issue with Squiers.

  • another great Squier bass for your collection! I like the feature set, looks and sound of this model. Add to that it's lighter heft and low price and you have a winner.

  • earl , you are right on as always!! This is totally fender/squier's alternative to the gsr 200from ibanez. I got the sunburst one full scale pj with the "boost" lol which like you said is just a preamp basically. I got it when it was still 199.99 before it increased to 249.99. Great bass

  • I love it. Thank you sir. Alway's love your review's. I bought the 5 string version in Crimson Red. $249.00 15% discount. I have an Ibanez SGR 305 & Squire Affinity Jazz. I doo Love this Bass & Sound. It Doe's seem too make me work slightly more than the other 2 basses I own. But the strings may be heavier from the factory? I'm use to 45-105 guage. Maybe after I switch em? However I figure if I practice a little more & switch back to the Ibanez on a gig? Maybe I'll play better? Thank's for your word's & advise. As Alway's great to hear you play. Your friend from Burbank California. James. Alway's looken for your latest videos. Happy 2017

  • This is my main bass, but I have the 5 string.  I put on some DR Marcus Miller fat beams with a pro set up, and I love it.  I can't believe how cheap it is, and how great it sounds out of my TC Electronic amp.  I recently found a great deal on a USA MM Sterling, but I am content just playing the jag vm 5.

  • I agree on all the points and yes, the HB version is not worth a penny, yes its all in the hand taet does that sound all the time with al the basses, however this one is sooooo worth the price it's almost weird…great sound, great set with the p & j. One thing tho, please put your mic as high as poss as you have lovely voice, at least I must switch it to 11 to hear you and I do want to hear your comments. Peace & Love Max

  • I'm thinking about getting this bass and was wondering how often do you replace the battery's as well as what is your favorite bass brand.

  • Be careful. Apparently, playing the bass can cause eye injuries. Note the safety glasses. It's always important to wear protective eyewear, when playing the bass. Hardhat and steel toe boots are not required, but they are sexy and the chicks dig em.
