Stack Your Overdrives like a PRO!

Overdrive stacking is one of the most effective ways to level-up your guitar tone. However, determining which pedals you should stack to get your desired tone can be confusing. Today, I’m demonstrating three overdrive pedal pairings that are used by some of the top guitarists in our industry. These dynamic duos produce heavenly tones that are far greater than the sum of their parts.

  • You just need the basic ingredients for stacking. You'll need 1 of each of the following. 1 humbucker axe, 1 single coil axe (I like Tele/SG), clean amp (but Marshall overdrive also stacks like a pedal and can be before or after with an fx loop), DS-1, Tube Screamer like drive (can be an SD-1 or an OD808 but not too far from the formula), Blues Breaker circuit, Klon circuit, RAT circuit, A big muff of some kind, an EQ, and a clean boost (the Timmy V2 can act as a TS, EQ and a clean boost). There's other stuff but it just either doesn't stack as interchangeably or because nobody does it it's not considered a desirable tone. Blues Drivers, OD-3's, pre amp pedals, amp sim dive pedals, more fussy about where they are in the chain types of fuzz, exotic stuff like Hot Cakes and Fairfield Barbershops are all cool but not necessary as basic tone stacking building blocks, a lot of these are just good on their own or will have 1 or 2 particular things they stack into better. And sorry but you don't need a Nobels – that's just a location specific preference type of drive, if your not connected to Nashvile it's in the exotic drive category.

  • What certainly "levels-up", if you use stacked overdrive/distortion pedals in front of your amp, is your noise level….

For me these pedals only make a tube amp sounding worse. Almost had all of them somewhen and they all became returns or had been sold very soon, because for me they did not improve anything, rather the opposite.
If your amp does not give you the sounds, you are looking for alone, you maybe simply are playing the wrong amp and for boosting an amp a little more, an eq-pedal in most cases also does a better job, at least for me.

  • Fulltone Full-Drive 3 is my favorite pedal stack. It has an independent clean boost and a tube screamer style circuit. A simple toggle switch lets you decide which pedal is first in the chain.

  • Am I the only one thinking someone should be making two pedals called "Batman" and "Robin"?

  • TIP NO.1: you're supposed to put pictures of what you're demoing on the side of the frame while the guitar is playing. ????

  • boss BD2waza into TS or vice versa with different settings. and/or klon.. replacing the BD.. I tend to keep them 3 on the board, but use only one or two together.

  • Man, I dig what you're doing here, but I really didn't like the sound of your guitar in each clip. It sounds like a piece of paper is covering the front of the speaker, or something weird.

  • 3:14 I am with this. I recently got the chase bills Automatone mk2 and I use that with my 808 on the Klon transistor and wow
