Stagg BC300 Bass Review – Budget Buck or Deer in Headlights? – LowEndLobster Review

Hey everyone! Today we’re reviewing the Stagg BC300, an entry level bass from the budget instrument manufacturer Stagg. Featuring an “alder” body, maple neck, PJ pickups, and 24 frets, this bass has some great specs on paper… But does that translate to a quality budget instrument? Let’s find out!

This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with MJC Ironworks Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(130) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at www.mjcironworks.com

  • If only there was enough coverage on Stagg ~12 years ago. Maybe I would've stayed with playing, but that humming and metal clanking of strings against frets kept discouraging me after time. At least I learned some basics and it also came with a combo unit. 16yo me with money wasted on this was jealous of friends getting more reasonable guitars that, while heavier, felt like another world.

  • I may avoid them because of the 1/5 at the end of the review for the full-size Stagg BC300 here; but I think the 30" scale BC300 3/4 NS with jazz pick ups looks fantastic in pictures. I probably should stick with my original plan to get one of these 28.6" or 29" scale instruments, also.

  • Was looking at one of these because it's one of the few short-scale JB copies I found. Thanks for saving me the waste of time and money…

  • I have just tried one of these. Your review is 100% accurate. Noisy electrics, poor balance, awful action, bowed neck etc, but very attractive visually and maybe could be made more playable with a lot of setting up.
    Worth it? Probably not IMO.

  • Thank you for saving somebody some money. Especially those looking for a first Bass. This thing will frustrate you and you'll end more frustrated than someone who starts with say a Sterling by musicman a $300 Bass that will give you great tone and playability. I have been trying to explain to a friend of mine for a couple of months now that buying one of those g l Gates and he's looking at the Rickenbacker that this is what he's going to get. If he's lucky. I've tried to explain to him coil windings, tonewoods neck through Construction, parts availability. He just won't listen keeps telling me he has a friend who got one and they're just totally worth the money not a chance my opinion. Especially in musical instruments you get what you pay for. I had been looking at a Gibson SG Bass and I thought let's try this Epiphone . The difference was dramatic very muddy. Imo you'd be much better off with it Mexican jazz bass. BTW if anybody knows or can identify that Walnut Ric behind him. It looks like a 4001s w but there are other things going on with it that say that's not quite what it is maybe some kind of custom or very low production model. I'd appreciate it though. Thank you!

  • I'm long time guitar player looking to get my first bass for recording purpose, I saw online I can get one that was an open box for $100 with free shipping, would you still advise to stay away from it at that price?

  • They used to be quite popular here in Poland. Well – popular in the sense you could find them everywhere, they were readily available but I'm not sure anyone bought those things. Actually I'd be surprised if anyone really did because they SUCK. The tone is weak and the build quality is way below sub-par. Actually, it's apalling. Just like in many inexpensive guitars, the headstocks are glued to the rest of the neck via a scarf joint, and in one I saw in a music store years ago, the joint actually stuck out! They didn't even bother to glue the headstock in evenly or sand down the resulting "step"! They're some of the worst basses out there – even for a much lower price they go for here in Europe (an equivalent of ca. $120-150). They're not even worth that little, especially when you can get a bare-bones simple but decently well made and surprisingly good sounding Harley Benton PB-50 for a comparable price.

I'd say one claw is a very generous rating. Those crappy bass-like products are best avoided.

  • Can you do a review of SX or Jay Turser basses? I remember during the early 2010s those were the "hyped" budget instruments on bass forums.
