The guitar legend straps on his Fernandes goldtop (once owned by Gary Moore) and gives a run through of all his pedals and how they shape his sound.
“I always apologize to the two Erics [Clapton and Johnson], ‘You have no idea how much I’ve ripped from you,’” joked Joe Bonamassa during a recent video with YouTuber Rick Beato. The Grammy-winning bluesman followed that up with a gracious response: “We all get it from somewhere.”
That “somewhere” is a muse that molds every guitarist’s individualistic style and voice. For example, Eddie Van Halen shook the world and confounded guitarists with his explosive two-hand, finger-tapped “Eruption” performance on Van Halen’s 1978 debut. Yngwie Malmsteen put listeners in awe with his dazzlingly clean and swift sweep arpeggios. They both became synonymous with those talented techniques, and were heralded as pioneering groundbreakers. But where did they get the ideas from before expressing and executing them it in their signature style? Both took a page out Steve Hackett’s prog-rock playbook.
Hackett’s two-hand tapping technique can be heard in the early ’70s on Genesis’ albums Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. Hackett’s sweep picking was first heard on the 1973 Selling England by the Pound track “Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.” Those contributions alone should’ve been enough to land Hackett in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (His combined work on six Genesis albums in six years earned him a slot in 2010.) On top of that smashing success and influence, he’s recorded nearly 30 solo albums—ranging from prog-rock and blues to world and classical—over a dozen live albums, and even traded licks with Steve Howe in the short-lived supergroup GTR. Hackett might not be recalled like the other guitar greats, but without his shoulders to stand on, those first-name giants might not have shone as bright.
Hackett’s headlining Ryman Auditorium tour stop in late October 2023 celebrated the 50th anniversary of Genesis’ Foxtrot—a seminal, prog-rock tour de force that was recorded when singer Peter Gabriel, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford, drummer Phil Collins, keyboardist Tony Banks, and Hackett were in their early 20s. Before the show, PG’s Chris Kies was invited onstage to go over the minimal-but-mighty setup used by Hackett. First tech Vince O’Malley detailed a Fernandes goldtop (once owned by Gary Moore) with its limitless Sustainer circuit and a treasured nylon-string Alvarez built by master luthier Kazuo Yairi in the 1970s. Then Hackett himself joined the fun and plugged his Fernandes into his pedalboard to show off all the sounds, tones, and colors he requires to honor his days in Genesis.

Steve's a genius with every aspect of guitar of course – but I was not ready for this, WOW what a palette of sounds!
what a tone
I'm a huge fan of Steve Hackett and I'm delighted to be shown his board. GT2s seem to really be his sound (I'm very happy with approximating it with a T-Rex Mudhoney btw). Just a question… at 12:39 why are input jacks in the GT2s not fully in?
I typically don't care for these modern higher gain oriented rigs, but that's the best sounding use of a Harmonist (or any type of octave effect) I've heard. Really inspiring.
I really like seeing the gear, seeing what these greats play, use and how they use them. However, your choice of person to do the interviewing leave little to none to be desired. He interrupts, he talks over, he interjects HIS own takes, he asks questions that he's already provided the answer for, leaving the interviewee to respond by saying, yes. He is awkward. He is trying to be a know-it-all about the gear and trying desperately to prove that he "knows his stuff" instead of asking the questions to the persons he is interviewing. Listen man, you got a lot to learn about interviewing people. I'm not interested in you, your seemingly vast knowledge of rock trivia or your benal interjections. Leave your bullshit out of the interviewing process. Let the person speak and ask questions not just make statements. Better yet, fire this Guy and get someone that can actually show respect to the people they interview, instead of some nobody basically interviewing himself. Boooooooo!
I love how he's using pretty standard decades old stuff the interviewer is obviously very familiar with, like the Digitech, Line 6 , and TC units, but talks about it in such a charming way, as if this is brand new state of the art gear that needs explaining, it never gets boring. He's one of the cool grampas who rocked the house in the 70s. Pretentious artschool prog? Sure, but even a grumpy seasoned punkrock smartass like myself can enjoy and respect this very very very much! (listen to the Foxtrot album folks, and watch some live footage from the peak Gabriel days and find out why this dude is awesome …)
I saw him play live a couple of years ago, i was blown away by his playing. Incredibly distinctive and versatile musician.
74 years old and still talking with the enthusiasm of a boy about his pedals. And so humble. Love it. May I be this way when I get there.
I'm surprised about the fact that Hackett use Electro Harmonix pedal, because I have use two Electro Harmonix pedal (Mel9 and C9 Organ Machine) few years now. One of my favorite guitar players ever.

He is a master of taste and tone !
One of the best rig rundown!
Love seeing and hearing mr Hackett (not a fan of the interviewer in this one tbh).
Glad to have seen him live a few years ago.
This was a lot of fun to watch. This part reminded me of the Old Batman (Adam West) TV Show for some reason. 6:27
Playing the rig instead of just pointing and talking.????
The fans = genius
Such a lovely guy ❤
I used to have a pedal board almost that large and then I started playing bars …. Miss my pedals. lol
Brilliant run down !
Classy gent, amazing player and great rundown!
That “humble plank spanker” wants nothing to do with modelers! ????
I got renewed respect for Steve Hackett, the man knows his stuff and is definitely one of the greats. Great interview/gear review too, love the interaction!
saw him play a year or so ago. what a great show!
What a fantastic interview for us aging guitarists. Thank you.
