Steve Vai on New Album with Joe Satriani, BEAT Tour, Prince, David Lee Roth and More

Steve Vai is back to chat all things guitar with GI’s Jonathan Graham as he reunites with Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson for G3 Reunion Live. Steve shares his memories of playing G3 shows over the years, working on the new SATCH/VAI album, and the challenges of making Robert Fripp’s guitar parts his own while on tour with BEAT.

Vai also reflects on his dramatic debut performance of “For the Love of God” at the 1991 Guitar Legends festival, the David Lee Roth reunion that almost happened, crafting “Eugene’s Trick Bag,” and what it was like stepping into the studio with Public Image Ltd. Plus, the truth behind the long-rumoured Prince jam session—and how one of his own tracks mysteriously ended up on a Prince bootleg in Japan.

All that and a whole lot more in this exclusive interview with Steve Vai.

  • All the biggest is printed into all the idiots. Iron Maiden is shit boring…. Metallica the same to point out the biggest, but Sats, Vai is the same. I've seen much better music in the underground where you do not follow deadhead what all do because they don't know a shit. Cacophony did good guitar rock… Voivod do great music and videos too….Gorguts do great death metal and psychotic waltz did super great rock. I've seen it all and the biggest is the most boring concerts…..they are for get out and find sex ☝️

  • I wish Shawn Lane would get more recognition among guitarist and guitar fans. Thanks to Youtube his music has a platform but he is still very much obscure. Shawn also idolized Allan Holdsworth, but I like Shawn's music and playing better

  • With the Roth reunion Fire Marshal fiasco what happened must have been when the crowds heard Steve, Billy and the others including the Steel Panther vocalist were going to do it THOUSANDS of people gathered in and around the venue. But once there when it was announced the REAL Rabid Lee Froth was going to turn up the prospect so terrified the Fire Marshals that the EXIT STAMPEDE RETREAT escape of the crowd from Froth would cause utter nuclear CALAMITY …..These days with his voice people would commit suicide rather than listen to him ????????(Paul)

  • Eric’s TONE is PRISTINE…What amazes me about him is his touch articulacy of picked harmonics above the pickups. He makes you think ‘my God , I never knew you could coax out harmonics and harmonics Melody which are that HIGH,,, that BRIGHT and that CLEAN????. (Paul)
