  • Nice too know another person learned the way I’m learning right now. Slowly learning the fretboard but the patterns helps me the most

  • Excellent! This is how I learned to play bass too. I learned patterns in major/minor scales, and then as I got that down and was totally comfortable, the notes and other music theory stuff just sort of….fell into place. Great lesson to help new players!

  • At my intermediate stage, I saw my fret board as two grids. Grid #1 was where all the notes were. Grid #2 is all the note options that expand out from the note I am currently playing. That grid, or pattern, jumps every time my fingers do. Late intermediate stage I was taught to sing along with my bass lines as I played them. If you can sing what you play, eventually it becomes just as easy to play what you sing.

I don't really "see" those patterns anymore. My bass is more of a musical voice these days limited only by what I can imagine.

  • Thats basically how i taught myself to play each artist i studied had their own unique pattern which was a good way to identify who was playing at the time……….

  • There are 7 neck positions of the Major scale. Many people think those patterns are modes. They are not. They are simply the Major scale.

Once you can play Major scale anywhere on the neck, then you can play any mode anywhere on the neck.

Once you can play Melodic minor scale anywhere on the neck, then you can play melodic minor modes anywhere on the neck.

Once you can play pentatonic scale anywhere on the neck, then you can play modes of pentatonic scale anywhere on the neck.

  • Please, slow down, when you are playing. I have watched you for few years and that’s my main complaint. If you are going to talk about basic bass concepts, assume you are talking to somewhat beginners. They may not know what notes you are playing and are looking at your hands, for that info. But, you are going so fast it’s impossible to see what you are doing. In demo’s, slow WAY down to show what you are doing. If not, your words don’t mean much. Just sayin’.

  • Thanks! This has given me some ideas on how to coach an older friend whose only been playing for a year. His teacher has him playing all the scales/modes, yet at a Blues Jam, he's lost. He's still playing with one finger too. I think his teacher is milking him for the Lesson Fees (he's got the money to burn, but why waste it?) Thanks again!

  • Was playing slap bass crazy foolishness for Larry Graham, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Ida Nielsen [Prince for the las 6 years] Charles Berthoud, Mohini Dey, Louis Johnson, Flea, Freddie Washington, Mark King??? etc. etc. Do what ever suits you but don't try and dissuade other people from what they personally prefer!

  • Great video Daric, I've always leaned on patterns in lieu of spending enough time learning theory ???? It's got me through though!

  • All of this is good and fine but where's the groove. A pattern is just a pattern is just a pattern, it's bland, it's lifeless without the groove. I'd rather learn to play the bass guitar to music than just sit there playing monotonous repetitive noises. This is why I quit the bass because all the teachers I had kept going back to the same repetitive means of teaching. No beats, no groove, no rhythm. The bass is boring enough if you haven't developed the tools to play what you hear. But without groove and music to go with that maddening pattern, what's the point. Makes me want to shoot myself, ugh!! Yeah the bass is made of patterns just like many instruments but if you aren't learning how to make that thing swing and groove, you're going to drive yourself up a tall tree and never be able to get out of it.

  • The fonkiest lick or fill I've ever heard was three notes, it was mostly about the placement but it was just a descending arpeggio aka pattern.
