Today, we continue on with our blues rhythm playing studies and take a good close look at T-Bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday”.
This is one of those classic progressions that’ll undoubtedly get called up at any blues jam you go to.
Still in a 12 bar format, but with some elevated chord changes and a few jazzy touches, this flavour of the blues tastefully straddles that line between dirty and sophisticated and is bound to take your chord work to the next level!

Classy chord voicings, extensions, alterations, substitutions, movements and essential chordal riffs.. this video has something for all levels!

** The lesson materials include 4 pages worth of neatly typed up examples in TAB and Notation.. guitar pro and PDF formats! **

  • I never really got the blues – thought it was just 12 bars…repeat. But I really dig this fusion of chord subs and side-steps as you call them. Neat. Your left hand technique is really inspiring as is the right-hand chops. It all just fits together but more impressive to me is your head-on no BS flow. Crackin' and thanks.

  • I really love the sound that you're making with that guitar. I'm sure I want to have to listen to this more than once… But I really like it and I subscribe. It's going to take some time.

  • I am a more advanced blues player and I simply love the techniques, your presentation and pace of it all; you make an assumption of basic chordal knowledge and understanding so the pace is perfect for me. Thank you. Your interpretation and exposure of one of my all time favorite, stormy Monday is simply stunning; reminiscent of Allman Bros, interpretation; remember they were, what, 23 years old when they did their Fillmore East performance: I was there!!!

  • Ah! That D7#9 to D7b9 sounded very familiar – and of course it would because that's exactly what Gilmour does in Breathe! ???? "All you touch and all you see / is all your life will ever be" going from Fmaj to G to D7#9 and D7b9. Alex, I truly appreciate all the knowledge you share with us and I enjoy learning from you! It's a true pleasure picking up my Tele and improving my skills with each new lesson you post!
