Stuff What I Got In The Studio // Ep 2 // Marshall Mode 4
You’re watching Episode 2 of a new series where I break down some choice pieces of equipment in my studio. Things I’ve had for years… sentimental things… things I’ve had for 2 weeks, that I just think are cool
We’ll see where this goes!

This is all about my Marshall Mode 4 amp that I bought in 2005, and the rest is history… and explained in this video

I have two. And two cabs. I friggin love this amp. I love how no one knows about it and if they do, they most likely hate it. Which is understandable because it’s simply not like any other amp. It’s not even like ITSELF when you compare amp 1 to amp 2. It’s taken a long time to unravel my preconceived notions of how to dial in an amp to be able to dial in this thing. In my experience, it’s best to start with the eqs all the way down. This is NOT like typical tube amp eqs like some Mesa Boogies that drive the gain. It’s all post gain eq into a high powered solid state amp(s). It doesn’t benefit from a tube power section to sweeten and sizzle the sound together like only a tube amp can. It’s more honest than that. To a fault. And that’s what pisses people off about it. It won’t help you…it will only make you fucking louder. I think of these eqs almost like the mastering process of a recording. The tone has to be shaped before the input (mixing the record) and THEN you do subtle moves with the eq on the amp itself starting from zero or flat. Because it’ll drastically spike treble and low end. To preserve midrange access, you have to resist the urge to boost eqs. I really think this is why they’re so hated. Because no one ever understood how to approach them. The clean channel is fucking glorious. The crunch channel is perfect. But amp 2 really really benefits from keeping those eqs DOWN from the start and just bring them up enough to enhance the tone you put into the front end. OD1 can be a perfect grindy low gain/edge of breakup thing. OD2 is a DOOM monster if you aren’t a bitch. Good luck everyone. Find one. Try my hot fuckin takes here and enjoy.
I use one of these in my live rig! Got a head and cab for £250 on facebook market place. Cab has been battered but it sounds great. I only use amp 4 scooped to hell, no pedals in front as I use this as a 2nd amp that comes in during big sections to support my mid heavy DSL. It works so well. Got my two piece sounding like an 8 piece.
Alex skolnick used them for years.I have one and its blah.
I have only seen one live with a band called Amen which was coheadlining the Barras with Wildhearts a while ago and it sounded huge. They are pretty cheap now and I don't know why they never really took off. System of a Down used those amps for a while and John 5 is always praising this model.
