Fender sounds warmer, and if you open up the master volume all the way it comes alive
The blues junior sounds like a Fender Amp. Get it?? If you like Fender Amp tones, this has it.
It took some time, but I own both of these models now. I agree with his review of both amps, but feel that the Supro recorded better for him than the Fender. The Fender is a bigger, fuller sounding amp in person. In the Fender, I replaced V1 with a 12ay7 and I couldn't be happier. My last Fender was a Princeton Reverb and I prefer this BJ iv. The reverb is more subtle, I like that there is a mid control, and I never got along with the Princeton's tremolo circuit as it wasn't deep or slow enough for my taste.
It had to be said – western tolex affects tone! ????
The major issue here is that the overall tone or EQ of the two amps was set so that they are very, very different from each other. This makes comparing the two amps or sounds almost useless. I would have recommended that you actually try to much better match the two sounds from the outset (and note any odd EQing that you might need to do to accomplish this) and then compare the various overdrives of the two amps from there. The Fender is way more and way too trebley and midrangy against the Supro, which is much more down the middle. When you compare all the various levels of overdrive using the various guitars, it’s very difficult to mentally compensate for that underlying EQ difference, as it plagues all the sounds going forward. The Fender always sounds way too bite-y and metallic compared to the more or less average, moderate, balanced treble and bass presentation of the Supro. I would love for you to do this all over again with a much more consistent tone from both amps at the outset. Then the comparisons and differences would be far more meaningful, discernible and valuable. Here, I fear any conclusion I might make would be unfair to both amps and I think that the whole endeavor is sadly a lost cause. Also, it’s better to talk less and to play more, having the sounds alternate faster, with text, so you know which is which. The human ear quickly compensates to any sound. So, the faster the comparison is (using editing, of course), the better and more valuable will the comparison be. It will be far more discernible and distinguishable to move faster and play shorter phrases. Lastly, I feel you are always playing to light. Who would play that light at a gig? There is rarely of forte or above in dynamic levels. It’s all around mp (mezzo piano) or so. Nevertheless, the main problem is the EQ differential at the outset—and, thus, all the way through—that makes this comparison video faulty as a whole and ultimately of little to no value, unfortunately. A for effort, no doubt!! It’s certainly nothing personal. Nice playing!!
What is that neck pickup in the Tele?
Love my Supro! I turn on and it sounds great. Awesome with pedals too. Probably trade for blues jr though lol jk
You could at least try to match similar tones, you are making them both sound amazing and shit at the same time. I don't like to be negative but after 2 mins of your video, I was out.
Supro here. I'm more likely to need it for lower volume practice or recording rather than gigging. A commentor a few rows down mentions the Fender might be better for a live amp – and they are likely correct there. There is an out line on the back of the Supro. I have run that out to the input of another amp (vox ac4-c1 12) to have a fuller, higher volume sound. The output of the Vox sounded a good bit like the Supro yet still voxxy and the blend of the two sounded nice together.
Would be interesting to hear this done with other combinations of different amps. Jack – Thanks! this was another well laid out, educational video that gave me a good feel for the comparison between the two amps.
I've owned a Blues Jr,. Supro Delta King 12, and Delta King 10. Oddly enough, the Delta King 12 is not a 12" version of the DK10, as many people assume. The DK12 is a 6L6 amp, while the DK10 is 6V6. They look the same, but they each have their own sound. I personally preferred the DK10 to the DK12.
The Blues Jr. uses EL84 tubes, so is really a different amp altogether than the Delta Kings. EL84's are typically more associated with Marshall than Fender, but I'm a fan.
I preferred the Blues Jr. out of these 3 amps. I was able to get some great tones out of the Delta King 10, but it was pretty finicky. I felt like sometimes it would sound great, and then the next time I'd plug into it (without changing any setting), it would sound quite different. – I think the Blues Jr is a very underrated amp.
Is there any truth to the rumour that Eric Clapton played the Albert Hall in London using a Fender Champ propped up on a chair?
Tolex for the win.
Get both.
I have a supro delta king and it kicks ass. I even bring it with me to the studio because I've managed to get such a good tone with it. Turn master on full, adjust volume, insert tube screamer and I use the ac30 mystic edge emulator. That's basically it, it sounds fucking great. It's so dynamic
Definitely the supro!
BJ sounds impersonal to me. Supro DK has a lot of character! I’d love to get one, but I already have the Pro Jr that sounds a lot like supro. Next to my Marshall Studio 15 and F Super Champ X2. Too many amps…
Both in need of upgrades, repairs or a sale to a pawn shop.
This version of Blues Jr. has an Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker, which is very dark and “swampy”. Not a typical speaker for a Blues Jr. or Fender amps in general. This is not representative of the “normal” tone. I wouldn’t base a purchase on this video unless you are looking at this specific version of the Blues Jr.
I’m just curious why Fender sells 100 BJ’s to Supro’s 1????
To my ears, the Supro's cleans sounds muffled and woolly… not my cup of tea.
The Blues Jr. is know to be not as good as the Pro jr. – unless you modify the speaker and the tubes and some of the caps. Why don't you compare the Pro Jr. to the Delta King 12? (I do understand that the Pro jr. only has a 10 ich speaker and no reverb and no Master volume. But it has THE sound.)
you have to turn the master up on the blues jr. if you turn the master all the way up and then use the volume control for volume/gain it sounds way better this way.
Just got a special edition supro delta king 12 for 499 at guitar center on sale i didn't know it could keep up with the fender which was really expensive I'm stoked great video you are a fabulous player
Just get a Phaez Amp
Iv been gigging a blues jr for over 1 year and have never turned the fat switch off. With that being said after 4-5 hrs of play I get alot more distorted tones than I would like. Not enough headroom in the JR either.
The BJ sounds much better when is cranked
The Supro's drive is horrible!. Nevertheless the clean is beautifull
Sounds like you need to select a different amplifier.I recommend a black star
BJ is dull
6L6 power
I think the Fender sound much better in this particular demo
Hi.The thing is that that CR speaker is really something different, lots of people like it, I don't, but I think I really hear that CR . By the way, yes I have tried it in a blues junior.
I know you mentioned that about speakers. I think that the blues junior 4 is the best version so far(and the pro junior 4 the worst).I still would pick the blues junior, I don't like amps with too many options lol
I already have the BJR 4 FSR that was featured here. Probably going to get the Supro as well for when my brother or son come over to jam. Seems like a nice bit of tonal variation to contrast with the fender
Both sound amazing! I'll have to try out that Supro
Thanks for the presentation using the tele. I was interested in both amps however after hearing them I’ll move on to something else. The speaker in the junior sounds absolutely horrendous. I will check out some of your other videos.
For me, as a jazz player, it's clean tones all the way. And the Supro DK12 sounds a lot warmer and more rounded than the Fender to my ears. I'd go for the Supro every time.
Someone!!! Please do a Supro Delta King 12 vs a Fender Super Champ X2 comparison. I have both, the Super Champ with the Ragin Cajun speaker and it literally blows away the Supro 12.
