Synth Bass Pedals | A Secret Weapon Everyone Should Try

I was psyched to dust off a few pedals that have been with me for many years and put them in a signal chain with a pedal that, while not new to the market, is new to me.

A friend of mine in Europe who is visiting soon ordered this to my house, so while I wait for him to pick it up I get to put the pedal through its paces and share the results with you.

From Stevie Wonder to Nine Inch Nails, the Doom 2 from 3leaf kind of has you covered for fuzz and synth bass sounds. I’m using my original 3leaf Octabvre and a vintage Pearl OC-07 for octaves, the Doom 2 in “Safety Orange”, an Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe, the Avalanche Run from Earthquaker Devices, and a pair of Teletronix TDIs to record in stereo.

  • 22:02 Imagine spending an ungodly amount of money on pedals (plus one on loan) just to accidentally emulate a $12US digital distortion simulator pedal from Ali Express (Specifically the M-Vave Mini-EFX).

  • The bass knob is the dry bass, which you can toggle to be filtered down. The other toggle turns on the octave up. Reading the manual avoids confusion at the start but you can't go wrong with this one

  • The IE Xerograph Deluxe is amazing, but if you’re exploring 3Leaf stuff, you should definitely check out their filters. I have every iteration of every one of them – I keep both a Xero and a Chromatron on my board.

  • Two kits:
Korg NTS-1 (mono synth, logue SDK compatible)
Hothouse DIY DSP (basically an open source programmable nano cortex-like thing, Daisy Seed based)

  • That stereo reverb makes me want to redo my whole setup in stereo lol, I guess that's what happened to you

  • I had SO much fun with this vid! It was like hanging out with friends making sounds and creating…just seeing what fun ideas come up and what inspires.

I also learned a little about how to better tweak some settings. So good…thanks for this one. ????????

  • I realy like the pedal order I use thr same but with different brands. I use the synth bass tone alot and I personally like the sound of it this way rather than the actual synth bass pedal

  • Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve been researching synth petals for the last year mixing and matching petals right now to get a pretty good sound, but I want a stand alone pedal.

  • I have ibanez SB7. The controls are really fun to play with. I will pair it with a Pearl OC7 clone hopefully.

  • I've had a Doom 2 for a couple of years now. It's definitely not a typical fuzz pedal and it has it's own thing that I haven't really heard in anything else. It's totally amazing in a synth chain and I even thought I don't use it on its own so much because either most of my pedals are on, or very few / none of them are, it's still plenty fun on it's own exactly because it's not the typical fuzz sound. If you want a typical fuzz, you just need one of those too!

  • Man, I love the doom2. You ought to check out the crowther prunes and custard. Similar top end to the doom, but it has some synthy goodness of it's own

  • i’m trying to figure out to mess with pedals when practicing, was wondering how do you go about deciding when to add your pedals into your practice time?

when you do, are there specific things you are wanting to achieve or is some of it just a way to make noise and explore what you can do?

    thanks..

  • I really like the range of tones, grit and sonic splutter. The chords are filthy af. I have an old Rat, Green Muff and Micro synth in parallel with the dubby lows fat and clean but I still get smiles from our guitarist when I step on it all. ????

  • Like many of us, I first learned about both bass fuzz and bass synth by Juan Alderete from when he was in Bassplayer Magazine in the early 2000s and later on his Youtube channel.

    I’m now many a pedal later… ????

Juan, although less visible now, still is a huge force of inspiration. Many other players followed in his footsteps for me. Like you, Janek.

Although Juan never could/would love any pedal with a dry signal, I’ve come to learn that I really need that in the bands I’m in.

That’s why I settled on fuzz and drive pedals by JAM Pedals (Rattler Bass is a must have!) and the old synth, modulation and crazier Multiwave distortion pedals by Source Audio (Soundblox 2) live.

But, the pedal bug got me and my wallet, ????.

I’ve got loads and loads. Guitar pedals too.

    ????

  • Dawg, your palm muting technique can get fucked!! I've so much work to do in that arena. It's all about touch & finesse, which is the essence of all instruments. As always, thank you holmes

  • 3leaf Audio makes damn good pedals, it’s a shame they keep getting swept up by scalpers and resold at a 100-200% markup on Reverb

  • The video is a bit old, but Zachary Rizer gives a great demonstration of using the Doom 2.

  • Finally snagged a Doom 2 a couple months back. I have to admit, I don't really love it as a straight-up fuzz, but it is sweet when coupled with an octaver or envelope filter. With the Doom 2 and a Micro-Tron 4 , I have finally been able to faithfully replicate the synthy-goodness of Hancock's Chameleon.
