Technical Difficulties Episode 4 : Ted Woodford | Guitar Repairman, Philosopher, Humourist

Please join us for the fourth episode of Technical Difficulties, a planned monthly live interview/chat with other techs and amp designers.

Today’s guest is Ted Woodford, a master craftsman whose work and attitude I deeply admire.

If you don’t already know his channel, you’re in for a real treat:

  • I love both of you guys! Psionic Audio reminds me of my early youth 5 years of electrical engineering in high school and college. Ted lives half an hour from my Uncle Bobby in St. Catherines, OT. I have learned so much about servicing my guitars and amps from both of you chaps. The content on both of your channels is such a valuable service for us all. Thank you both for that.

As an aside, as a professionally working musician, I find that both of your guitar-playing skills are higher than most repair dudes in the industry. Ignore the idiot haters who cannot find a gig to save their lives. Harrumph.

  • Holy crap! I've been waiting for this months episode of Technical difficulties cause you'd said I would like it after I mentioned how much I loved and respected your channel as well as the Teds channel. And I've been so busy I haven't had time to come watch it but I searched it just now and who do I see? TED! Lyle I can't begin to tell you what a wonderful x mas surprise this was for me lol! I wanted to ask if you were alluding to Ted being featured but that sounded too good to be true so I didn't dare get my hopes up lol. I said it then and I stand by it now, you Lyle as well as Ted are outstanding teachers, techs and entertainers and your channels are the best YouTube has to offer! Happy holidays and as always enjoy "polishing, polishing, polishing" and keep that "soLdering sodering" iron hot!

  • Pls. let me troll this comment section for a bit 🙂 Mr. Ted is my main inspiration for crafting around on guitars since a couple of years. so much that I even purchased and tore up a cheap acoustic and crossbraced it. Lyle, you are also a hardcore inspiration. Thanks to both of you, and please keep doing what you do, it is greatly appreciated

  • In response to JD S's qustion about repairing a fret with solder, I have used solder to mend a dent in a fret before. It's a perfectly suitable short-term repair, but is absolutely not a long term solution because the lead is just too soft to hold up for long. Got a gig in an hour? Flow some solder into the divot, recrown that area with a file, sand, polish and go to your gig. It should hold up until you or your luthier can replace that fret.

  • You to are great teachers, so learning to deal with Fender's Hot Rod Deluxe Mod 3 Limited Edition with heat problems that I built cabinets with 2 AC fans and watch for heating. So far, it's holding fine so far? Thanks for your in direct help.

  • Quite apart from those of us interested in the guitar, that was such a useful discussion on dealing with unfiltered social media generally. Full of good sense- thank you both.????

  • I just want to thank you both for your contributions to your respective crafts! As a guitar AND amp tech, I can say that I have gleaned much knowledge from both of you. I would not be where I am without you! Nice to have these resources in Canada!

  • Thank you to both of you for all the work that you do to get the videos together and on Youtube. I've noticed a lot of people make less than thoughtful comments to people that are making great content. I know there are hours and hours of unseen work and there is expensive equipment not directly related to your main focus. Cameras, mics, editing software, high speed internet for uploads….

  • My two favorite content creators, together! Damn, wish I'd found this in time to watch it live. At the risk of overloading you with flattery (I know how you guys hate that!) I just want to say that I really enjoyed this. Enough said.

Oh, one more thing…Lyle, feel free to open a video with a Werner Herzog impression. I had to watch Ted's several times, I was laughing too hard to catch all the nuances on the first pass!

  • I just live vicariously through both of your channels LOL I work on my own stuff because I enjoy doing it but I don't really want to get into the business. For what it is I do enjoy both of your channels.

  • One thing I notice in Ted’s playing demonstrations is he often plays a little style that fits the style and period of the instrument he’s playing.

  • I have a Suhr Hombre and a Friedman mini amp thanks to your videos with those amps, and I sold several things to afford a Huss & Dalton 00 sized acoustic after seeing them in Ted's content a couple times. Great amps and a beautifully made acoustic. My "one nice acoustic".

  • I havent started watching yet, but just have to say, the only thing better than having the two of you in the same video would be if Marshall from @WristwatchRevival came along for the ride as well.

  • Why does this feel the same as when you were young and you saw your teacher outside of school?

  • You both are educating in a way that is old-world, which is priceless; and you are exemplifying how to implement new tech to tackle the craft.
We are all better for learning from your example of transparency as craftsmen.

  • Great chat and nice to see you two finding community. Don’t look at the comments. Do what you’re going to do and trust your intuition. Any attention given is just watering down the end product.

  • Hi Lyle.
I enjoy watching your videos and I have become a lot more knowledgeable through your in depth explanations.
I love the way you don't bs about what's good and what's not.
    Now, I have a question!
I recently purchased a 1964 HW Fender Deluxe Reverb, the re issue, and I'm curious to know if there are any issues that I should be aware of, if you know of any?
I bought the amp from a reputable dealer here in the UK and I'm delighted with it.
Obviously, if there is something that I need to look out for to maintain its longevity.
Thanks for the brilliant videos and wait in anticipation for any info you may have.
    Kindest regards, Andy
