Testing 9 Pedals to Find the Best Bass Drive

In this video, I shoot out all my drive/distortion/fuzz pedals, play through each one and show off some different tones and how I like to use them. I also show how I set up my bass pedalboard for both live and studio use, featuring a Boss Line Selector acting as a clean blend, allowing me to have total control over how I mix in the drive pedals to my clean sound. I’ve been using this set up for years and many records and shows, so I can attest to its power!

  • Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie Hella Bass Fuzz is a killer.Has a blend and sounds great. Is the Carvin your live rig? I gigged for years with Carvin amps and my main bass for a while was a Carvin.Really good reliable gear.

  • My favorites are the EHX big muff pi and the Boss ODB3. Nothing fancy, but those let you blend in your dry signal perfectly and they are very different from each other. But any pedal that doesn’t have a dry signal blend and volume knob, is a no go for me. I don’t want my drive to take out the bottom end and I don’t want them to cause a spike in volume.
Most boutique stuff is too priced and even lacks these crucial functions.

  • Ah man, I forgot all about the HM-2 on bass. I used to have one but foolishly sold it. Just ordered the HM-2W!

  • Could you explain your tuning again? "Drop C" and "DGCFA" makes no sense. Cool video though, I'm trying to convince myself to get the KMA Wurm to replace my HM300

  • My new go to bass overdrive is the Way huge pork & pickle. When In a mix it sounds incredible, smooth. Clear, cuts in the right place. I normally have to do a lot of processing to get the bass where I like it but using this I had to do very very minimal eq and it just floored me how amazing it sounds with my guitars and drums. I like it in the overdrive setting not fuzz with the clean blend half way and drive about 9 oclock. Tone in middle.

  • Great video! I have a lot of questions. I had to back it up and watch sections several times. Interesting pedalboard setup! I'm not much for fuzz on a bass, but I liked the Keeley. The OD-3 was kind of impressive to hear. I think it could be very useful on the right mix. The digitech grunge pedal was one I have never heard of but thought it was great. I think it might be interesting to hear the grunge pedal and the HM300 blended together. Are you using the Plugin Alliance VST bass amp? Impulse responses that you run it through can make a world of difference! If you haven't found him yet, check out resington channel on YouTube. I might have to go searching for bass cabinet impulse responses now. I subbed after finding your blind amp sim shootout, and started checking out your older videos. Keep posting!

  • Finding a perfect dirty bass sound is an insatiable rabbit hole for me. What sounds great one day, turns into mush the next. It’s the only thing I’m OCD about. (Well, not the only thing). Thanks for the detailed vid. Some of these pedals I’ve never heard about.
