In this video Daniel and Mick explore some basic concepts around getting a better solo tone.

What is a better solo tone? Obviously it’s an extremely subjective topic once you bring personal likes/dislikes into play, but the one thing on which we can all surely agree is that as a very basic start point, a good solo tone begins with ‘one that can be heard’.
By contrast a ‘bad’ solo tone is one that can’t be heard, and there are many of us who have been in that situation where you step on the next pedal to make your tone soar… only to find that it just crashes! That is where we begin.

Throughout the video we touch on the areas of gain, EQ and relative wetness of your effects in the context of being heard for that all important solo.

  • I know this is a pretty old episode but I'm feeling the same thing as a lot of these comments. More of you guys playing together. That intro made my hair stand up.

  • The best amp I ever had was a Flextone III by line 6; used in conjunction with the FBV short board it was amazing; me. Then I sold it as I read so much doom on social media about Line 6 amps. It was nothing like the Spider range and I seriously wish I’d kept it. Moral of story let your own ears be the judge And like D&M say it’s all about context.

  • if you guys had to choose between the angry charlie and the at drive I am curious as to what would you prefer.

  • Great show, as always, guys! Tube Screamer into Carpe Diem = not nice (sounded like it actually muddled up the nice tone of the Carpe Diem). I noticed this same thing when using my tube screamer before my Friedman BE OD or Suhr Eclipse pedals. Tube Screamer after the Carpe Diem = delightful, gave it a full bodied richness and great articulation at the same time. Similarly, stacking the two high gain pedals (Carpe Diem and Angry Charlie) didn't sound good, but if anything, diminished the sound of both great pedals.

  • @13:07, Although I could hear the guitar better the tone was not good, the first tone was far better, Actually sounded bad to my ears.

  • How can you talk about solo tones & not talk in depth about how to get & use feedback to your hearts content?

  • my singer used my EQD spires fuzz the red side is a nice silicone fuzz. the green is a nu-fuzz octa fuzz. and so the FOH engineer hit it. and I was running going "NNOO DONT TOUCH!" haha it was funny the feedback was like godzilla raging

  • I have a Fender Champion 40. I like the gain channel but I cannot get a solo volume boost out of it when I use an overdrive pedal. Any suggestions? Hi

  • hi guys great video. i totally agree less gain cuts so much better. only thing is no my single notes lack sustain. any suggestions to boost sustain other than more gain ? thanks

  • 2 ge7's are better than 1, totally changes tone if needed. 1 pedal board 1 eq for Tele and 1 for humbucker PRS, all bases covered. Side note: Royal Flush pedal is 98% KoT for way less $$. Great show, been watching for years, great info, lots of fun and costly haha!

  • I work completely in the box but you guys have taught me so much, like how rhythm and lead prefer different frequencies and levels of gain. Amazing channel and highly under rated!

  • I kinda disappeared in the mix when soloing a few hours ago. After watching this, I'm swapping the order of pedals tomorrow to "mid push" overdrive (TS) after a "flat'sh" overdrive (BD-2). I had it the other way around earlier (TS into a BD). Thanks for this video! TPS University!!! 🙂

  • I recently tried a mini tube screamer set to the extreme with volume all the way, tone around 2 o clock, and drive set to lowest, going into the angry charlie, with bass at 3 o clock to bring back some lows, mid turn down to 9 o clock because of the tube screamer, high around 1 o clock, gain at 9 o clock and level at 2/3 o clock to push the amp. I find this is a great sound that can be fully adjusted depending on the guitar/amp.

  • This video change the way i use my pedals. I read in a lot of forums that the TS9 go before the Rat, but i was needing a boost for my solos. Im gonna try the TS9 after the Rat and see what happens. Thank for all your help guys. You are amazing ✊???? Greetings from Chile

  • Thanks guys, funny that by now I expect a lot of your conclusions to come down to context and application haha, which is exactly right and lots of valuable clarification.
