  • Andy: several interesting things: 1. There are a lot of Gibson SG’s, and Les Paul’s… 2. Several of the guitarists, I don’t know if I agree with you— Pete Townsend? Yes. Your assessment of Clapton? Nailed it.
    3. Beck and Hendrix? I’ve been preaching that exactly argument. Beck invented his own genre of guitar playing and may be the greatest CREATOR of guitar sound/exploration/etc. But HENDRIX created entire worlds. So, yes yes to one and two.
    4. But you are dead wrong about Van Halen. I think he is not a guitarist at all. Everything about his playing is an abomination and audibly offensive to me. (I’ve been playing guitar for 60 years – and I’m really good far away. :-). I find Van Halen’s music to be generated by a THING or a business or something less than a human. (Not that he’s not a human…)
    5. Those other guitarists? I’ll suspend opinion. I just don’t know. And there are sooooo many good guitarists. I’ve loved Johnny winter, respect but don’t like Stevie Ray Vaughan, loved peter Green but he unfortunately did not change the world like the others… and so it goes.

Thank you for your entertaining and provocative reviews. I love them all.

  • Probably should’ve been expanded to 20 with added guitarist Paul Kossoff, Joe Walsh, Kim Simmonds, Johnny Marr, Keith Richards, Dave Davies, Peter Framton, Rick Nielsen, Steve Hackett and yes Eric Clapton for all he did up to 1970.

  • Same obvious list everyone else has,I would of put chuck Berry at number 1,just because he took the blues and invented rock guitar

  • Pete Townsend stole the windmill move from Keith Richards,I know you don't like Keith but Pete thinks he's the greatest

  • I agree with you 100% of what you said about each one, well not so much of a Townsend fan, I think him as more of a songwriter than performer.
Keeping in your standards I would have such a hard time not finding a spot for Alex Lifeson for performance and Joe Perry for that coolest Muther phuqer in the room vibe.

  • Angus young???? You're having a laugh. He's a clown and an average at best guitarist. Greater blues guitarist than Clapton? I stopped watching in disgust when you said that. Ac/dc are shite. Crap drumming and God awful vocals. Vastly overrated.

  • I’d vote for Steve Howe, but I’m not sure he really qualifies as a rock god

  • Glad you included Angus, people who are dismissive of ACDC have no idea how good they are. I saw Angus tell a story about the first time he spoke to EVH. EVH excitedly told Angus he was a huge fan of his, Angus was thinking "YOU'RE a fan of ME?" Even Malmsteen rates Angus. Also, fantastic to hear you were at Monsters of Rock 1988, I was there too and I remember seeing Steve Vai.

  • When I lived in NY I knew this 90-something old guy, really interesting character. Eric Dolphy was his cousin, and he told me that once, sometime in the 60s, hanging out somewhere in the East Village, he watched his cousin and some other jazz guys playing hard bop with Hendrix, who was more than holding his own. "Guy could play anything," as he put it.

  • Besides being an innovator and a virtuoso, Stevie Ray Vaughn SINGLE HANDEDLY revived the Blues as a genre. Maybe he is not mentioned at all because people believe he is just a Blues guitarist….. but he is iconic, he has a unique persona, and can rock with the best of them. Love your videos and I can't argue about any guitarist on your list. Keep the content coming Andy!

  • Except for about 3 of them your list is utter garbage. It’s not even worth critiquing, but I understand it seeing as you have distinct musical tastes.

  • A top 10 will always leave great people out, but I really miss people such as: Steve Hackett, David Gilmour, Steve Howe, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana and, of course, Eric Clapton.

  • I've seen every guitarist on this list live except for Hendrix. The best player of them all was Michael Schenker.

  • Just as Eddie Van Halen performed his iconic Jump riff off the guitar, we can thank Jeff Beck for the drum intro to Stevie Wonder’s Superstition.

  • While I fully agree with your selection of Steve Vai, I am surprised you didn't include the contributions and influence of Joe Satriani, a legendary teacher who developed multiple great guitarists, including Vai. Much of what modern guitar became was due not only to EVH, but also to Satch…
