The 10 Greatest Synth Bass Lines Through History (and how to get the sounds)

Today we’re lucky enough to have one of my favorite bassists with us…

The legendary, Ian Allison!

Seriously, Ian is super talented, and if you haven’t checked out his course – How To Get Hired: A Creative Approach to Session Bass Playing – put it on your “to-do” list RIGHT NOW! It’s that good.

In today’s video Ian is going to show you how to recreate some of the most awesome keyboard bass parts that I’ve ever heard, but he’s going to do it with a Jazz Bass and some regular FX pedals.

With so much synth bass in modern music, it’s a skill that the musicians around you will really appreciate.

In this lesson you’re going to learn:
– How to replicate synth sounds with a bass guitar.
– Why your most important tool is an octave pedal.
– How to use an envelope filter to emulate synth bass.
– Why the beauty is in the repetition!
– And much more..

  • Wow I just cannot believe you skipped Maria Magdalena and Your Woman, two of the most iconic and coolest sounding synth bass lines ???? I always wanted to learn how to get that sound, now I have the Stomp and still only trying.

  • Why is this guy talking to the camera like he's teaching a kindergarten class? Hand gestures over the top, making every point seem like he's reading a nursery rhyme to 5yr olds.

  • Sorry Ian your settings on the PDF are confusing ie Dancing_.• Octaver, a bit of gain, and delay set to 117 bpm -Theres no bpm on HX in simple delay. whats the note sync? I cant find one that works

  • For some reason, Ian on this video remembers me my favorite scene of School of Rock, when Jack Black talk about the artists and songs to their kids in the classroom for the first time he realizes they have talent for forming a band.

  • Love SBL, Ian is a great addition. These tones are epic. I recently got a Helix Floor and been slowly dialing in some bass tones. I know you’ve done some HX stomp videos. Is it possible to get into weeds with the Helix? I play in church and a lot of the worship songs have some nasty bass tones!!!

  • 100% Agree with that Aaliyah bassline. I recreated it in the early 2000’s in FL Studio on the Wasp synth. It’s still one of my favorite sounds.

  • I was listening to Chameleon the other day and after like one minute orr so I had to check what was going on with the tempo 😀 So cool!

  • This video made me sell one of my upright basses, and use all my money on effect pedals. It was actually a great decision, thanks a lot!

  • Boogie On Reggae Woman by Stevie Wonder. Square wave, synth-y, big sweep at the start. Its great.

  • Would’ve made more sense to use UK drill for the 809 example because of all the slides and active movement but overall a great showcase of pedals

  • So happy YT put your video up on my screen. Anything to do with synths and/or a base guitar and you explain everything you talked about plus bringing up such amazing old songs that I actually heard the base for the first time. Well you know what I mean. Thank you.

  • So I was asking myself who is this new guy on SBL, this apparently the first video of him on SBL. I came across it while I was searching for MXR envelope filter pedal reviews. Love this guy.

  • Nope, this video is incorrect. No top synth bass line list is complete without Rip it Up by Orange Juice.

  • Thanks Ian! I very much appreciate this video because I have been kickin' around the idea of a synth pedal for my Jazz bass for quite awhile. But this video hepped me to the truth that seperate pedals can approxmate so many sounds. Excellent. Thank you, sir. SBL is a rockin' Bass channel!!!!

  • The Aaliyah line wasn't played on a bass. That's 100% a programmed 909 or 909 emulator plug-in.
It spunds cool. But it's kinda odd to compare them to synth bass lines played on an actual bass.
But trying to emulate them is fun.

  • I've loved SBL for a long time, and I love it even more since Ian joined. Being a great player and being able to teach other players are two very different things, and Scott and Ian have both. Kudos! Also massively sexy j-bass!

  • Ian, I was wondering if you can get all the sounds you mentioned from the Boss SYB-5 or SY-1 pedals? I have both and was wondering if this is a way to get the same tones with a smaller footprint. Thank you

  • Just a tip: the valeton dapper bass effect strip is a very affordable brilliant option to have all the analog (!) effects together in one!

  • Stevie Wonder's Boogie on Reggae Woman still has the most impressive and nearly impossible to replicate synth bass line. It's mind blowing! Love your other selections! PYT is fabulous!

  • Cool video, but no link in description of the settings promised at the end of the video
