The 5 Levels of Longview (For Bass)
???? My full beginner bass course: https://yeah.bassbuzz.com/longview
You think Longview is just a basic beginner bass riff… but there’s more to Mike Dirnt’s magic than meets the eye.

Yep, we’re talkin’ about Longview, from Green Day’s 1994 Dookie album. Whether you call it punk rock or pop punk or power pop, we can all agree that Mike Dirnt kills it on the bass.
This is a super popular “beginner bass riff” that everyone wants to play on day one, but there are a bunch of ways you can go wrong. In this video I’ll walk you from level 1 – Noob level – to level 5 – Mike Dirnt beast level.
I bet you didn’t know these things about Longview:
* You can play it as a total n00b and survive a garage jam
* It’ll teach you a rhythmic concept important in jazz, blues, and other styles
* You need to hold a strategic piece of plastic to play it right
* Mike and Billie Joe did something super weird with their tuning before they recorded this album
* Dirnt copped some serious Peter Hook vibes in part of the riff

What level can you make it to?
I'm a beginner and I started practicing this song in level 5, so I'm not progressing 🙁
Lmao. The advanced move is to play it in the proper tuning????????????
Mike uses a pick
Bro explains stuff so clear. I’m tryna learn some good bass riffs to impress the teacher in my jazz band audition. Wish me luck
Hey Josh, I've followed you and then bought your course. Everytime I come across you and your content I learn something, on top of that it's usually cool stuff. So thank you, you're very accomplished at what you do and I wanted to show my appreciation
Learnt it like Mike Dirnt burnt it.
Poetry.
I'm playing this on guitar and this video helped but tabs don't open
2:13 yes josh this is me
With your lv1 to lv5 approach I'll have this bassline down in no time! And I also think the creator is excellent. Very charismatic and engaging. I'll be watching this video lots!
I would almost call it more of grace note than a swung 8th note.
Bro,looking at your fingers, you have all 4"+ fingers. So easy for you to say/play!????????, with my hobbit hands,I'll do me best!
I was raised on Davie504, "holy pick" is something I can not process 😀
reducing string tension by tuning down changes the sound. it adds more character and is chunkier. you hear more fretting noises. it actually sounds great on bass
What you have shown is the easy "level 5" riff. I was hoping that you will show how to play the hard part but i did learned something from this one to.
I've been playing guitar for a while so playing this came easy to me but you killed me at the pick game, I've gotten so used to picking up and down consistently that Its so hard to change
STAP with the selfpromo filler in your vid (3x I counted) …..If ppl want to check you out, they will…. or wont.. and that's cool.. Just let the vid speak for it's self…..
0:57 the thing
You mean the description ????
why are you so perfect, josh?
very awesome ! …… love you for what you do !
I don’t even play bass
What about Rammstein Seemann ? That's my favourite bass riff of all times. Everybody loves that
Josh is nearly as cool as Paul Weller????????
I honestly never knew the bass was tuned down for this. I kept wondering how he played the lower string…
am lvl ashtray thank you no thnk eyou
The jazz guy cutaway made me laugh out loud! lol!
I play this song without the pick and if feels much better for me. For some songs I use pick, I came from the guitar but it doesn’t feel okay with the bass
I can't believe level 5 doesn't include the slide to the highest note… I'm waiting through the entire thing… He slides and sometimes hammers on too.
That's like…. just as important as those "swing eighths" VERY important…..
If you really want the correct tuning, set your tuner to 444hz. All of dookie and insomniac are slighter higher than true Eb standard
Interesting video. As a person who doesn't play bass, I always wondered what the sound difference is between a picked note and a plucked note.
I lak dem bass geeterz. ❤ Whoo!! ????
I'm obsessed with this tune for some reason
Ayo, when you hear what he says bro 1:13
Great video! A video about Carlos D (Interpol) would be also interesting.
Lvl 6: Buy 2 SVT and 2 8×10 fridges yeihh
Mike got high then write a walking jazz bass line and it into punk. What a G!
This was one of the songs who gave me more inspiration to become a Bass player (apprentice, but bass player =D ). My level here is 5. I love this song, so I spent a huge amount of time to make it sound right. Thanks for this video man
This is an awesome video!
I cannot hear even the first few notes of the Love Will Tear Us Apart riff without shivers
Make a video like this on Basket case
Andy Rourke F# standard tuning
You spent a ton of time making this video, but you're making a major mistake right out of the gate. Back when this song came out, I figured this bass line out by ear. To avoid confusion, I'll talk about it in standard tuning- because that's how I always played it. He opens the riff by hitting Open A, then hamming onto the 6th fret. Then he does the same- Open A, to a hammer onto the 4th fret.
Am I the only one who thinks there might be something to that Jazz version of Longview? ????
I own quite a few basses but that Squire (same colour) has a special place in my heart. I play it a lot and I love seeing you using it here. Great lesson!
Tuning down while fretting up makes no sense to my simple caveman brain. Isn’t that a wash?
You should have said Mellifluous also!
