  • 1:10 Throaty – Stratocaster (SRV), benefits from a booster
5:44 Brown-sound – (EVH), high gain, Plexi amp
8:09 Vintage/Creamy – (Eric Johnson) hollow body + neck pup, Marshall + drive
11:25 Guitar Hero – John Petrucci, Steve Vai distortion (high gain) + delay (gate, reverb) "wall of sound"
14:50 Grungy – Kurt Cobain, Indie Rock (Queens of the Stone Age) – drive pedal pushes amp (-> no bass on amp)
18:22 Perfect Clean – Orange amp
7th tone is "leave a comment" — personally I don't understand how "twangy" didn't make the list, the only tele in the vid had humbuckers

Edit: also thought of these today – chimey (bright), bitey, punchy (percussive), dark

  • Did you really put the definition of 'onomatopoeia' on the screen and still use it incorrectly?

When a cat meows, it sounds like "meow" when a throat makes a sound, it doesnt sound like "throat"

Throaty means it kind of sounds like the sound a throat makes. That's not onomatopoeia

  • 1:51 i don't know what to call it, where you slide up, then go back and slide higher, go back slide, slide higher, but I usually hate that kind of thing, but that was perfectly timed and done.

  • Does anyone remember Rocksmith? As a learning tool it wasnt all that helpful for me, but it had a mode where you can set up a virtual amp and effects cabinet. I would play around with that finding different sounds and tones. Thats what that app you used reminds me of.

  • How I get the grunge sound is I use a fuzz pedal. It can be any fuzz pedal honestly, but I recommend a big muff pi or a fuzz face.

  • Its called the guitar volume knob. Get rhe amp overdriven with whatever pre amp pedal, …. then roll off the volume knob slowly. Take the time to listen, play. Dial it in. Tweek tone knob as wanted. Tweek amp tone settings as wanted to make it you. Then …. mic it with a shure 57, record it. How's it sound?

  • I love my Spark 40. Super fun to mess with.
I returned my FM9 because I wasn’t pleased with it at all. So it’s the Spark for fun, and 79’ JMP for business.

  • Great idea for a video but really poorly executed. Something more consistent with more discussion of how to dial in pedals and amps correctly would have been so much more helpful. Almost no discussion of the role of the guitar (eg pickups, rolling off tone), or even playing techniques used to access the tones. Was useful to get a sense of what 'creamy' or 'saturated' sounds like to understand terms but not very useful beyond that.

  • It's called the "Brown Sound" because people shat themselves upon hearing its awesomeness.

  • so wait… are the tones also available on BIAS FX2? I mean it's also from positive grid but I can't find them on there.

  • The "Brown Sound" was first associated with early Eric Clapton. He had a sunburst Strat nicknamed Brownie. He rolled the tone all the way off, and the resulting tone became known as the "Brown Sound."

  • I, for the life of me, cannot figure out how to get Jimmy Page’s sound for the opening riff of Houses of the Holy. I get the feeling he is using an amp mic and a room mic and panning between the 2 in the recording, but I can’t figure out how to do it live. I’ve tried every type of flanger sound under the sun.

  • My favorite clean tone is a chorus pedal into a Fender Twin or a Roland Jazz. I wouldn't use an Orange for cleans, but you made it sound good. ????

Correct … A transistor distortion before a valve distortion gives you s good precise attack but the warmth of of the valves.

Sustainer add certainly on colour to it.

Standartreciepe for good punchy lead tones which turn over too overtones nicely …

  • Your "Creamy" sound reminded me of Steve Morse more than Eric Johnson. Still, you just can't lose sounding like either of these guitarists!
