THE 7 SECRETS OF A GREAT BASS TONE

In this lesson we’re talking TONE.

And no… I’m not going to be talking about how “the tone is all in your hands”.

Instead I’m going to break down the 7 specific things that make up your bass tone – exactly what they are, and the differences between them.

Knowing these 7 bass tone essentials is going to help you understand:
– Exactly how to dial in the tone you want.
– Why you might not be happy with your current tone (and what to do about it).
– What things you’ll need to bare in mind when purchasing your next bass.
– And way more…

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott 🙂

  • Sensitivity of the amp input also affects tone of a passive bass, because the impedance of the pickup tends to be higher at higher frequencies. A more sensitive amp will deliver a brighter tone.

  • We steing players should probably say that tone begins in the fingers. To state flatly that tone is in the fingers is highly misleading, as most people who say that appear to imply that tone begins and ends there, so if you're not this or that player, you're never going to sound remotely like anyone else.

  • the playing with a glove gets me every time. I understand it I just can't do it myself. I need to feel those srings on my skin.

  • Dime it. New round wound steel strings. Scoop the mids. Fingers close to the bridge. Dig in.

  • Let’s not forget the attitude of the bass player & the tone he makes when he gets that attitude adjusted

  • Yada, yada, yada, yada. Tell me something I don't know, Scotty. I've been playing bass for 55 years, professionally for 45 years. You got nothing on me, wanker.

  • How does wood matter? Have you made any blind tests on instruments which differ only with wood?

  • Would be rad to have an example for each of these numbers.. for instance a video on "how flatwounds vs. round sound?" or "Different size speakers, what sort of difference does it make?"

  • Kick the #5. It's a myth… (Jim Lill made a great video about it). Also, Active/Passive makes a huuuuuge difference. Not saying one is better – it's just a different world.

  • I cannot distinguish between new and used strings. All other changes I can distinguish immediately.

  • Maybe i'm a little late, but i'll try.
I have an Harley Benton mp 5 ej active, and an ashdown Mag 250 amp.
The infinity of different tones i can get makes me confused.
How can i simplify my settings?

  • Diary of a Tone Chaser:
My tone has always been great. Even when I had crappy amps, cabs, basses, & pedals, strings, and so on. I didn't know wtf I was doing as far as eq, or at least I thought I knew how to use it. I used to build 2-3 rigs a yr. I was never satisfied. I'd go to clubs & watch & talk to other bass players. I could never afford some of the gear they used. So I made due.
After decades of playing, not playing, and starting over, I have probably the best tone I've chased down yet. 20 something yr old Spector, GK head, Markbass cabs & a couple of pedals to tweak tone. But I don't flood it with eq anymore. I use mids, always have. Yes, kids, mids are a thing. Big, thick, punch you in the gut tone. I only need 300 of the 500 watts available to play any room. I don't get mic'd or plugged in. It's all my rig.
You can make crappy gear sound good, but if I could do it again, I'd have everything I have now. Mmm, maybe a couple of changes.

  • I thought he was going to mention the effect of his glove. And the string rattle you can hear on his base in the earlier sections of the video

  • I don't get why so few bass brands put tone pots on their active basses. Just cutting the treble knob won't have the same effect as a tone knob would.

  • the secret is in the fingers my friend ! i saw richard bona play on a 150 dollars bass, he had the same sound than his fodera !
