The Beatles Best Unfinished Song & What Happened To It

Recorded in February and March 1965 and originally planned for inclusion on the UK ‘Help!’ album, ‘That Means A Lot’ was one of the songs The Beatles couldn’t finish in the studio. It did eventually get an official release on ‘Anthology 2’ in 1996 but the results could have been better.

  • One of my favorite unreleased tracks that came out on the Anthology series, along with 'Step Inside Love'. 'That Means a Lot' had so much potential, and it's a shame they never finished it. Great video Andrew, excellent research. Thanks for sharing.

  • Haha, cool vid. I love hearing how much fun guys were having especially with that lame test take! Shows a lot about them and their nature of having fun when they feel bored or getting stuck on the tedious thing to go through.

  • That Means A Lot has always been one of my favorite "unreleased" tracks. I hope it gets a proper treatment someday.

  • Always loved That Means a Lot … When those first boots came out my band learned it and played it all the time….. I Always heard a Phil Spector vibe in there!

  • Fun Fact: PJ Proby's splitting tousers incident in 1965 you mentioned, gained such notoriety that, in the same year, The Barron Knights in their comedy medley 'Under New Management' sung the words: "# Unfortunately it would be impossible to fit PJ Proby in the Government………." impersonating Proby "….'cause he would cause a split! *ripping sound*" ????????

  • They should've done a mashup of Ticket to Ride and That Means a Lot on the Love album.

  • The Beatles had great instincts for what to release and what to give away. It’s best that it wasn’t released IMO.

  • The best unreleased Beatles song gotta be Leave My Kitten Alone. The pure energy would only make Beatles for Sale even better!

  • Anthology 1 sold 450,000 units on day 1. Unprecedented. Not Guilty. Their best unreleased single.

  • When I saw the title on this video I hoped the song should be "That means a lot". I think this song is better than many of the others on Help. From what I have read, they never thought it turned out right. Never understood why they gave it up, but maybe they just got tired of the work with it, and wanted to move on. Great song IMO.

  • I think it’s a great song. Perhaps the dark mention of suicide kept it at bay from serious consideration for release. The concept of suicide came up again in Yer Blues which, as a John song, either John or the group figured they could get away with. The word of course resurfaced as a song title in 1969 during the Get Back sessions but was abandoned seemingly immediately. The song showed up on many bootleg albums, and of course we got 1.5 seconds at the end of Hot As Sun/Glasses on McCartney. When that song was released in the archive series, it starts in the same place that the 1.5 seconds clip does and continues to the end. What does the beginning of that recording sound like? The piece we got was disappointing considering how long I waited to hear it. Then there’s the “Sinatra Submission Version” heard on Good Times Coming. Have you ever done a story on that one Andrew? I’d love to know more.

  • There's an Australian band called Beatnix that released a CD called It's For You with songs by Lennon and McCartney that had not been released before (some had already appeared on the double CD Live At The BBC), while others would only appear (officially) on the Antolhogy project. The album surpassed several versions (some by the Beatles, others by people who recorded them).

It's a shame that the CD is not available on Spotify or Deezer.

  • I love the thumbnail. "They couldn't work it out," made me laugh really hard ????

  • I wasn’t even aware of all the bootleg and anthology songs and have only recently listened to them. I am amazed, and shouldn’t be, about how wonderful every single take is. The Beatles have so much energy and pizzazz? – that the smallest snippet is a joy to listen to.

  • I think it's a great song. Not sure if I would call it that introspective, but it definitely lines up nicely with a lot of the more soulful and emotional ballads the group were making at the time. A new mix would be nice, but I have to admit I'm a bit partial to the reverb soaked anthology version. It makes it unique and adds to the kind of trippy atmosphere it inadvertently carries, especially once you get to the outro.

  • Houston is pronounced like “Who’s Ton” or “House Ton” in England but American’s usually would say something like “Hugh’s Ton”
    Cheers ????????

  • I always loved That means A Lot, especially the heavy reverb version as it highlighted their beautiful harmonies. I would've put that version on one of their earlier albums.

  • I like the song Commonwealth that was a snippet in the Get Back series. John did it. I never heard it anywhere else.

  • What draws me close to this song is the mid-sixties vibe —that is probably the best part of what the Beatles put down —-the words are ok. Thank you for doing this one Andrew.

  • Thanks for the outtakes that I had not heard. The song I really don't understand why they did not release is "Leave My Kitten Alone" On Anthology it sounds complete and ready to go. And how strange would it have been if they had released both versions of "I'm Looking Though You"? I prefer the released version, but the other version is not all that bad.
