The Best Guitar Amp In The World [And Tips On Using Pedals With It]

Is it? Or it is? No doubt the whole internet will completely agree. Ha!

Welcome to the show. We always say we dislike calling things ‘better’ and ‘best’. Or indeed ‘worse’ or ‘worst’. But y’know this is the internet and sometimes people say arresting things to get clicks. Just imagine it.
Anyway, is it? What do you think? And are you still apologising for your volume and tone?
Enjoy the show if you dare.

Interesting bits and go to sections…

  • Take many of the points made in this video, but there is no doubt in my mind that the quality of live sound engineering has taken a big dive over the last couple of decades, despite the massive technological advances made in gear, sound treatment and acoustic analysis. It's not just guitars, it's also flat, unadventurous drum sounds that I hear when I go out to smaller gigs. It's like the sound person is too scared to put anything thru an fx or processing unit or to push the pre-amps a little.

  • Well. Not sure where my original comment went to … But I was going to recant my testimony regards DR's not being the best amps in the world. Since that comment, just a week or so ago, I have loaded a Celestion 90 watt Black Shadow into my 1977 DR in a MojoTone cab that has a BF OT, and all new vintage tone caps and coupling caps. WOOH! I AM ASTOUNDED AT HOW GOOD THAT AMP SOUNDS!! And I have yet to hit it with any pedals at all. Wow, what a sound!!

  • I like my '78 Marshall JMP 2104 combo a lot. Great cleans in the low input and nice classic rock sound in the high input. MV works really well when running dirty. The drawback is the weight, but where there's a will, theres a way. I had an early 70s Deluxe, but I sold it for some higher gain amp in the 80s. Dumb decision, but I was playing metal and rock.

  • I agree….The Deluxe is amazing… I've an original 65 Deluxe, that was used in a BLUES HOUSE in Texas. Only one time the amp was usei by Lightnin Hopkins..Its a peace of story…

  • That section starting at 2:50 should be learned by everyone who picks up a guitar and tube amp. I learned this far too late in life when I finally built my own little Class A Princeton-ish amp head. Turn the amp up and use the guitar controls. Once you understand what does what, THEN go out and get stuff to get what that won't give you.

  • I always feel that people tend to think about volume with only rythem/solo moments. And that's just not enough – when there is a big chorus with big drums sound you need to be much louder than before (even if you play still chords). Becouse in this kind of music there is still dynamics (as apposed to more pop music). So you need to have some sounds+gain stages+ volume…

  • 24:11 is something every damn tech, manager, promoter, venue personnel in the world should hear and accept as TRUTH.
If there's a drummer on stage, playing acoustic drums, there is absolutely no reason to not use an amp ????????????????????????

  • This video led me in the direction of purchasing a vox ac15. I’m no longer spending hours tone chasing on my boss katana and suffering from option paralysis. I’m hearing sounds from my guitars I haven’t heard before, clarity and definition. I’m focusing more on playing and sticking with stock sounds and everything sounds fantastic. I’ll keep the katana if I get into a situation where the vox isn’t cutting volume wise. Top video gentlemen! And sincere thanks!

  • Oh, and SOOO good to see the Xotic EP on there……….I have one as a solo boost a the end of my pedalboard and an RC at the front! I never play my amps just straight in…..my "core" tone always has the RC on, then gain stage is an Xotic BB, then solo boost (after all the wobbly bits and timey bits) is the EP. Boring post here, sorry, but I am connecting so well with this video, both as encouragement, and as learnings!!

  • I'm a Vox guy (AC10 in pubs gigs, AC15 outdoors) and I have learned to use my guitar volume!! And learned the trick to wait until the drummer starts hitting stuff before I play a note in warm up 🙂
Better still, The Vox really "throws" its sound outward (closed back cab and that glorious Vox frequency which just CUTS THROUGH) so I don't need my stage volume as apparently loud as it is out in the audience – however, I have had sound guys just lose it and turn me off in the mix. No worries, I just turn up on stage – experience tells me when I'm being heard by the audience! One trick though, for those who don't gig much, don't try and get a FOH "mix" at your ears – that way you will never be balanced properly. Learn to hear yourself at your knees (if it's a pub gig) so you don't play TOO loud; and yet, don't let the singer tell you how loud to be (you're not playing for them, but for the audience!!)
GREAT video guys, as always (and although I totally disagree with this being the best amp in the world ????, being a Vox guy, I would say that, wouldn't I??)

  • Yep, heavily modified with 2 extra gain stages and 1980's EV12L speaker. Dare I say a Mesa Boogie 2C++ is screaming to be reissued .

  • I owned a 65 Deluxe Reverb, I really liked the clean with reverb for jazz w my 355. It did sound wooly when turned up, but, looking back, that was due to the semi hollow guitar I was using. I also had issues getting over a loud drummer. I think you really need 40 watts to clear a loud drummer. I used a boost pedal to get over the top. And yes, is was a monster pedal platform.

  • Best sound I ever got out of an amp was a 1965 AB165 Bassman with the channels jumpered, playing an SG with P-90s and a Rangemaster clone.

    But… no reverb.

Bandmaster is similar, but… you can't jump channels on a Bandmaster. DR actually comes close, but part of the magic of my Bassman was the original 2×12… and a DR is 1×12, open backed.

Based on the marketing and clips I've heard, I think the Carr Impala may scratch that itch for a mid '60s Bassman with verb. But $4000 is a lot of scratch for an amp I can't even try out anywhere.

  • I absolutely love this video; I am currently running a small board of Boss pedals (BP1W -> BD2W -> DM2w -> GE7) into this amp and using the EQ as a boost in pretty much the same settings. Love, love, love, this video format, btw.

  • Just when I had decided I was going to go with the Line 6 Helix…this vid pops up ????????. Currently gigging a Peavey Vypyr Tube 1×12 in a country/pop/rock cover band. Probably still going digital for cost and convenience reasons, but mannnn, I don't think I'll ever be satisfied. (welcome to being a guitarist to me haha)

  • Probably one of your most important films to date. Reassuring that you can get great tone without having to 'chase' the elusive perfect pedal or pedal combo.

  • I would say it should be the Vibrolux Reverb; just slightly bigger and heavier to carry, but it has the advantage of the 2 x 10" speakers for better note clarity and definition, and just a bit more power. Same preamp, essentially, but I prefer 10" over 12" speakers. 12" speakers tend to lack in the higher midrange, making notes a bit muddier. The Vibrolux and Super with the 10" speakers are better for note clarity.

  • I had an outdoor festival gig this weekend. I wish I watched this first. I set my Deluxe Reverb (79 silver face) to just over 4 (volume), 6 treble, 2.5 bass, as I usually do. The sound guy told me to turn down (he was quite red in the face). Instead of turning down the amp, I should have used my overdrive to turn down, and then turn it back up when the gig started to be heard over the drums and bass (our first song was our sound check). My amp was far back and out of reach… Damn it! It sounded fine, but did lack the liveliness of the DR turned up. Next time. Thanks for a great vid guys.

  • Super reverb will do everything and more with single coils p90s and humbuckers small to large venues the deluxe is great my 61 original strat with my original 65 black face super has a bigger tone clean through dirty period and the 59 bassman will stomp a deluxe ass also

  • Gees it seems a know brainer in studio i play to to comfort of my ears then.back off a bit speakers / bins face away throwing the sound on 2 larger surfaces giving it more head where gutsier amps are in play ,elevation can also be useful to how sound is thrown from any anp/speaker combo great vid lads

  • Of course the Marshall vintage modern combo is a lot cheaper if you can find one, and though it’s reverb is not all that it will do everything you could want out of an amp

  • This is the best amp in the world if you're gay or have low Testosterone…
Everyone knows it's actually a hot rodded jmp (topology)… Or clone/interpretation of some sort.

  • Love the pedalboard with the graphic EQ set for a slight rather than exaggerated adjustment. With EQ (and most pedals) it is tempting to bump up the effect a bit simply because you can, rather than dialing it in to enhance your playing rather than becoming the main feature of it. ("Scoop the mids so you can cut through the mix." ZZZzzzz)
