The Craziest Ibanez Bass You’ll EVER See!!

What is that bass? Is it an Ibanez? These are the most common questions asked in the TalkingBass comment section. So today, we’re going to look at the bass you’re all asking about and I’ll show you how this Ibanez differs from EVERY other model on the market.
We’ll look at those crazy pickups, the electronics and some other mods I’ve made to it since purchasing it in 1993.

  • The RG is the most Recognizable and distinctive guitar in the Ibanez line. Three Decades of Metal have forged this high performance machine, honing it for both speed and strength.

  • As soon as i heard the question, i automatically knew it was an ibanez. Very noticeable designs. I love ibanez basses. My dream bass was the edb5000 model.

  • I used to have an Ibanez 800le..I loved that bass. It was stolen from a gig I played at a benefit for a little girl who had skin cancer. Yeah, really nice. I found it at a pawn shop, after being there several times telling them to look for it, with pics serial numbers, all specs. Yeah the thief brought it in and they bought it from him anyway. Then tried to resell it. A friend went in there and saw it, and told me. I went in and told the very same guy I talked to several times" So, you like buying stolen property? You knew it was stolen." They guy ran into the back. I went and called the police. They got back to me saying the pawn shop was protected since the guy had an ID. I had to buy my own bass back for what they gave the guy. Real nice. It was a cool sky blueish..played great. I lost it agian and said 'screw it, no sense chasing it all over. I sure miss that bass.

  • Finally, always wanted to know what that is.
Btw, I would love it if you explain the bass line of Alice Cooper – Poison. It is very melodic and difficult and I can't find accurate descriptions

  • 0:06sec into the video = that thing looks ridiculous – BORING & is in NO way POINTY – I do NOT want a Bass Guitar that looks like it was made in a S@xt@y factory

  • Interesting. I bought that bass (same colour) when it came out. I didn't have it that long and sold it for a Yamaha TRB5, which had just come out about the same time as the Ibanez. Nowadays I just use a P Bass. Great Demo!

  • I love my hipshot detuner. I thought they weren't very useful for a long time, but bought a modded out pj that had em

  • I own an 06 made in Korea SR500. It's an amazing bass with premium tone woods. I have flats on mine and the action is super low and sounds great! I would love to put those pickups in my bass! They sound amazing!

  • Good to see Ibanez getting some love. Light weight, slim neck, great sound and comfortable to play. I own three: a 4 string, a 4 string fretless and a 5 string fretless. Great basses.

  • I have a fairly basic Ibanez SR300 in a similar blue. I agree wholeheartedly about the neck, I love the 24 frets and how slim and fast it can be, it is my usual go to bass.
I love the mods you have made to yours, how easy is it to change out the pickups and electronics given there is no pick guard to hide any extra holes/routing that may or may not be needed?
I modded up a knackered P bass earlier this year and the pick guard definitely helps hide some of the extra work needed!

  • wow, this bass is a blast form the past. I almost bought this exact bass back around the same time. I even put a down payment on it. Changed my mind at the last second, but always wondered is I should have bought it. It was so easy to play.

  • Funny thing is that all those settings do kot sound at all to all those basses, those pickups have their very own sound which is not bad but not even close to the sti gray, jazz or P J

  • Nice mod! Those pickups are massive, but they sound awesome! My main bass also has pretty special pickups in it: Delano TheHybrids. They are switchable from J to StingRay, both of which are spot-on. They achieve this by not only splitting the humbucker, but also tapping a coil. So in single-coil mode, you get a high-impedance single-coil, just like a vintage Fender. In humbucker mode, the J coil is tapped to low-impedance and wired in parallel to a StingRay-specced coil with big AlNiCo magnets.

But now I have another bass building project which takes flexibility to another level: 2 low-impedance sliding pickups, combined with a filter preamp a la Wal/Alembic (I ordered a JTEX Distiller). Because pickup position has a huge impact on the sound, especially when 2 pickups are combined. And the resonant frequency defines the voice of a pickup. This new bass should be able to approximate StingRay, Jazz, Preci, Rickenbacker, Thumb, Wal and more. But it will take a couple of months to be finished.

  • Ibanez SR is the king of underrated basses. I love mine. The player just has to understand it's not a p or a j bass.

  • Great video! The Hipshot Xtender was one of only two sound significant (vs. looks) mods that I made to my bass, the other being the Hipshot KickAss bridge. It's really handy when you need just a little bit more low range.

  • I have several SR basses dating back to 1992 but I like to upgrade one to your pickups and preamp. Where’s the link to them?????????????????

  • Only thing that's missing is a switch to select which exact coils you're using. If the single is the inside or the outside, or if the split coil is a regular P or reverse P 🙂

  • I remember that bass.. My friend bought a Turquoise one in Kansas City.. We called it a Slut Bass, cause it would get played and passed to another bass player, then that player got bored with it and passed it to another. That bass had 6 different owners and got played by everyone. But, it was cutting edge at the time cause it was lighter than a guitar.

  • Those pickups are impressive! Surprised by how “p bass” they can sound and then switch to something like a stingray

  • I still have my SR1200 in transparent green, with gold hardware and a hipshot drop D tuner that looks very similar to your bass sans pickups. I still love it after 30 years, the SoundGear neck and light body make it great on long gigs!!❤

  • Nice! I had one in black a while back. Pretty heavy bass for the small body. Fast neck and great sound. The mid switch was interesting. I took it off and went passive with the dimarzio pickups. Was very nice !

  • Very cool video Mark. My first bass was an Ibanez Roadstar so I have a soft spot for them. Thanks for sharing.

  • Looks like that shape was used by Ibanez for a lot of models, my 1986 RB850 (although black) looks VERY similar.

  • Finally! I've always seen this bass and known you modded it but I wanted to hear the full breakdown.

  • Still have my SR1000e from '89 with the brilliant Ibanez USA DeMarzio PJ pickups. Still absolutely love it. Sounds fantastic and so, so fast to play.
