The DANGERS of Bass Solos ☠️❌❗️

To check out the COMPLETE SBL interview featuring Victor Wooten, click here: https://youtu.be/bUlS7q58Ovo

As you’d expect, he dropped some serious knowledge bombs such as how he picked up the bass aged two and was playing live at the ripe old age of six! How he was tutored by his four brothers, particularly his guitar-playing brother Regi. How he learned to tap by listening to Stanley Jordan. His collaboration with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller under the moniker of SMV. And much, much more…

  • I was fortunate to see Victor with Bela Fleck about 13 years ago or so. He and Future Man made the whole show for me.

  • Write less busy songs that express bass.chops.Dont spin the bass around your neck on a paid studio gig.Simple.I, write bass lines that imply that I have solo skills and theory, but I dont.I put the theory and " licks", inside the completed composition, where you might think I can solo well, but Im in no way interested in soloing.I hate soloing on bass and drums, and I play both instruments. ????????????

  • I can see that, I’m a bass player myself and the bass player job is groove the F out of the band, your left hand is a melodic player, your right hand is a percussionist, and the job is to glue down that rhythm section with the melody section. That joy, that magic is what this master musician is missing, he is a victim of his own talent, he will always been known as a soloist, a master technician in the instrument but no as the guy that make you dance, the bass is not designed to be heard, is designed to be you feel, make you want to dance, you think is the guitar but not that is the bass telling you how to move. I will argue in any stage that the average person only hear the bass if the bass player makes a mistake, other than that is just pressure waves hitting your body. Is the real joy of s bass player seeing people dance.

  • Fortunately enough to have heard Victor live. His own show, no less. Call him for the bass lines, he'll be killin' it like nobody else right now.

  • What a ledge for us all to rest on, and learn from. One of the all time greats in bass, in life, in teaching. Awesome. I can totally understand why that can be frustrating. Cuz at the end of the day, he is a sensational bass player, who loves to play songs/bass lines.

  • Victor is a champ. He had a gig in my town and afterwards he took the time to speak to everyone that came up. Not just hello but conversations. He's as down to earth as they come.

  • As Poppa Chubby once remarked, there are two most useless things on this planet:
    – The Pope's bollocks
    – Drum solos

I tend to agree, and think usually bass solos are on par with drum solos in that regard.

    But…

There most definitely are a few bass players out there that can absolutely solo.

And VW is certainly one of those select few ????????

  • Man never mind the bass solo, basslines is where it's at, without a great theme and chord structure there's no music at all

  • Victor is underrated imho as just being a bass player, not a soloist. My favourite stuff from him is just when he's in the pocket, grooving. His feel and tone is so so so good!
