The Goldilocks amp – Sampson era Matchless Chieftain captures for ToneX and QC

The Chieftain is Matchless’ take on the best of both worlds – Plexi and VOX.
The amps character is similar to a plexi, but has more clarity in the mids, chime that is reminescent of a VOX, while being a bit softer, more refined and compressed than say a 50W plexi.

At the same time the extra oomph from the EL34 power stage gives it more authority and bottom end compared to an AC30, while being not strident as the AC50’s tend to be, in part thanks to the cathode biased output stage.

Its Mids control is extremely powerful and can go nbetween a scooped, balanced or mid forward tone, which together with the Treble knob allows to dial it in more into the plexi or AC30 territory.

Does beautiful cleans, crunch and everything in between, it takes pedals really well too.

This particular specimen is a Sampson era amp, which is by many considered the holy grail era of Matchless.
