The Grasshopper Lies Heavy Gear Rundown and Interview | Electric Guitar, Bass, Pedals and Amps

The Grasshopper Lies Heavy is a heavy band, and I don’t just mean sound-wise, their guitars and amps are heavy. Come see the Marshall Amps, Electric Guitar Company Aluminum neck guitars, pedals from all over and get the tone knowledge, nay, the tone wisdom from James Woodard.

James is proud of his 1978 Marshall JMP and 1975 Marshall Superlead and they form the basis of his sound, and unlike most players who base their sounds around their guitars or particular pedals. Because Marshalls are sound unto themselves his pedal and guitar choices are more meant to enhance the Marshall sound.

In James’ Guitar Pedalboard, The Creepy Fingers Fuzz, Soda Meiser Fuzz, BOSS Heavy Metal HM-2, BB Pre-Amp, DOD Phasor/201, Boss DD7, and Boss RV-6. But it’s a constantly changing set up and he has other favorites including the Frost Giant Electronics Massif Fuzz, Noise Swash by Dan Green, and Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water.

In Oscars Bass Pedalboard is a EHX Big Muff, Proco RAT, Boss CS-2, 63 Fender Reverb, and a BOSS DD6.

The Grasshopper Lies Heavy has toured all over the country multiple times, and internationally in Japan. If you get a chance to see them I highly recommend you do, you won’t forget it. In the meantime, check these deets:

  • Big Thanks to James Woodard and Oscar Moreno, not only for the interview but also helping me through the litany of technical issues we had. This was the first time I took my video gear out of the house and that was a learning experience Itellyouwut.
Anyone have a favorite part? The noise swash will haunt me for months, but I'm a sucker for just that drone we had at the beginning. I tried to do my best with it mixing-wise, but nothing really captures the feel of that much volume when you're in the room with it. Louder is More Better.
