In this episode we explore what I consider to be the greatest and most melodic guitar solo (that also happens to be impossible to play).

That entire album (Travels) is ridiculously good
Love this solo, but my fave is still from Have You Heard. That solo will forever blow my mind
I thought for sure you were finally going to dig into Syd Barrett’s… …whoooole thing he had going on there. A guitar track as a painting.
Michael Brecker (with Pat Metheny and McCoy Tyner) did a great version on Brecker's 'Tales From The Hudson' album in 1996.
I urge you to look at the studio solo by Guthrie Govan at the end of Steven Wilson's Drive Home song. 1st take was the only take.
Love how much you love this. Makes me fan ????. In my amateur opinion, Pat is a jazz horn player…born too late…or too soon ❤️
Dont look back in anger is better than this
You should check out the guitar solo on Tribute to a legend by JazzKamikaze! Played by this amazing Danish guitarist Daniel Davidsen ????????
The beauty of Pat's playing is that he makes you feel like you are walking the very edge of a very high cliff, but knowing that you will never fall.
⚡️ I was just thinking, Rick, how crazy it would be if Eddie was still alive and you had him on your show.
Love your channel glad everything worked out well for you
I am very excited to hear the mystery of my favorite song that I have been listening to since I was a teenager. I was impressed that there is a friend across the ocean who considers the solo of this song to be the best. Incidentally, I am a Japanese of the same generation, and when Pat came to Japan in the late 1980s, I handed him a letter and recommended a visual collaboration work. After that, Pat came to Japan with a Canadian ballet company and premiered Steve Reich's music. He also created a video work in collaboration with Peter Beard's photographs, directed by Academy Award-winning art director Eiko Ishioka. I am grateful to be introduced to this wonderful album "Travels," which is filled with the breath of the open-minded Pat Metheny Group at that time.
Sorry Rick. I love ya like a brother but but i had to give you the Beavis and butthead stare like Barbara Streisand came on their tv. Should be a pause in the middle of the solo indicating 4th floor sporting goods
"I hate music, there's too many notes"
Paul Westerberg
I remember playing this song in college, although the version I have was off Michael Brecker’s “Tales From The Hudson.” Great stuff.
Pat is the only person on earth able to utilize that particular Roland GR55 sound
That’s what I call letting your musical voice out while you’re in the zone! Love it!
Really like Pat Metheny but not a fan of the guitar synthesizer. Would have loved to hear the guitar solo minus the synth (maybe some overdrive a little distortion and delay). Very complex theory way above my head, just can't get past the synth. My favorite Metheny albums are Bright Size Life and Off Ramp. Another stellar album is Lyle May's first self-titled solo album. Wish rick would do a review of this Lyle Mays' album if he hasn't already.
search for "manoel o audaz" Pat metheny recorded with brazilian guitar player toninho horta, back in the 70's
I wonder if Pat could have done it on an electric guitar?
How about some of Nimmy Page's live dtuff on The Song Remains The Same, movie concert! No way half of the stuff on his solos were rehearsed at all?
On the radio in 1985 I heard a Clapton / Waters concert, kind of a big deal. Playing "Money." E.C. expanded each phrase of the solos, keeping them intact, like a wide river flowing, and then it stopped, the crowd was cheering. Never heard it again, though YT has some from the same tour and they're great for sure. That darn radio station or whoever did that! Like, cut the river with scissors. And they don't get credit for splicing!
Trey anastasio improvised solo for “Monsters” at deer creek 2024 night 2.
I guess it's great. It's just not what my ears like.
Song for Bilbao is one of my favorite songs since I started liking jazz as a teenager -I’m mostly a 50 yr old heavy metal head…
AND I’m from Donosti… ???? good point for Bilbao
"The Epic" is another one of my favorite Metheny solos.
????‼
I can't help but think about Metheny's quest to play like/sound like a trumpet, especially on synth guitar…but I gotta say, RB, the way you cop that killer phrase at the 6:25 mark with an overdriven/rock sound is sick man! Love it! Would also sound sweet with a more Holdsworthian tone… Had to drop that before thanking you for turning me onto this tune & giving us all the wonderful gift of this thoughtful & reverent breakdown!
Regret nr. 9 by Guthrie Govan
Dude he’s playing it like a trumpet solo.
If you like jazz than this is true. But try dancing to this. This is what Elaine from Seinfeld is dancing to.
I got to see him twice, so Amazing. Loved him since Bright Size Life.
Can Pat play it again perfectly?
????Just went over my head like a low flying F16.. I’m dizzy now.????????????
Love this solo. It has since (in my opinion) been superseded by his last solo on The Way Up Pt. 1 as his most melodic solo on record.
What a pity he used that orribile synth sound????????????
Rick needs to hear some Phish
Request!! Could you break down Lila's Dance by Mahavishnu Orchestra? … you'd have a blast with that one!!
One of Pat’s not so secret secrets is that he’s actually a horn player playing guitar … so much of his phrasing comes down to that very thing … a horn player who cut his teeth on hard bop.
Pat Metheny is the most important musician alive. I would put him along with the most important musicians of all time. Every time I see him, I leave the venue thinking "WTF did I just hear?" Seeing and hearing Pat live is always an experience beyond description. He is constantly reinventing himself and pushing musical boundaries.
Those Bridge chords sound very Charlie Brown to me.
Thank you so much Rick! I have loved Metheny for decades! And every time I watch one of your videos, I am liking you more and more. I can not see something from you without learning something new. Please keep up the good work. Oh, and you are making playing "Air Guitar" cool again… From someone who has played it over 55 years!
Great guitar solo
Pat Metheny is a monster. A true musical genius, where perfect technicality meets pure talent. I’d love to see Rick dissecting one day the orgasmic “Are you going with me”. Keep’em coming Rick!
