The Martin DX Johnny Cash – One Of The Best Acoustic Guitars Of 2019!
On behalf of The Music Zoo, professional studio and touring guitarist Zach Comtois gives a rundown of the fantastic new Martin DX Johnny Cash model! This new DX Johnny Cash model is a nod to the history between Johnny and Martin Guitars. It was designed in collaboration between John Carter Cash and the Cash Foundation management team, and features a Jett Black HPL body with a black birch laminate neck, and the richlite fretboard is inlaid with stars and the CASH logo. It also features Fishman MX electronics and a Martin gigbag embroided with the “CASH” logo as well. At this price point it’s a great pick for the player who wants to pay tribute to the legendary musician!

Is it a smaller guitar? Like martin Jr.?
It's a over priced plastic guitar not even the soundboard is real wood.
When you buy one it's the worst setup guitar you will ever own. I bought a £100 acoustic that was set up better.
Your money will be better spent anywhere else on any other guitar. I will never buy another Martin.
Come on man it's laminated. It sounds like a six hundred dollar and that's ok! Although it has a low volume. The good thing is that you can take it to gig
Exactly what $6000 acoustic guitars are you listening to you fcken imbecile…?
I bought mine just over a week ago and IMO, it's the best sounding of Martin's X Series guitars. I just changed the strings on it today, with a new set of Martin 12's phosphor bronze and boy, what a huge difference in the tone. My only dislike, is the gig bag that came with it, so I'll probably be getting a HS case for it.
It sounds like a bad piezzo while there's a pickup in front of the guitar. Definately not the kind of acoustic sound I like and more like a $600 guitar.
Nice!
Je la veux
This was a terrible review compared to others online.
Holy smokes!!! thats the perfect sound. I just got mine. With the BOSS LT acoustic singer amp it sounds sooooooooo perfect. Man what a guitar!!!!!!! i love it big big time..!!!!!
Is the DX Johnny Cash a DXAE Black revamped? Have one in my local pawn for $500, need to know if it's the same…pretty much?
The more I see the guitar, the more I think of suga.
does this guitar has a truss rod? thanks in advance
The DX1e is the same but just put your name on it with stickers for hundred bucks less. I notice there are not a lot of DX1 blacks available. Maybe till they dump a bunch of these.
sounds horrible.
Yeah, Min Yoongi in your area.
That gave us no idea of the guitar sound whatsoever. Just an awful piezo pickup which sounds like a plastic bag full of flies.
I got one of the new 2020 all HPL Koa models. Basically the same thing with a Koa pattern instead of all black. Same pickup, richlite fingerboard and bridge, laminate neck, etc. For a travel guitar that can withstand different elements better than an all wood guitar, it's great. Does it sound anything at all like an all wood high end acoustic? No.. not in any way. If it sounded like a $6000 guitar, why would anyone buy anything other than an all HPL guitar? This guy is an idiot.
dreamer
Anyone searched up Cash guitar after Suga played Jungkook's guitar in RM's birthday live?? ????♀️????♂️
I tested it…. terrible sound…. :-/
Road test feedback, one year and 100+ gigs in running with Martin Authentic Acoustic Phosphor Bronze strings throughout. Pretty much perfect. My son is 20 and plays relatively heavy (he split a Gibson medium pick in two Saturday night), Indie Rock mostly although he does have a love of Johnny Cash, Dylan, Clapton and The Beatles. The gigs are pubs, small bars and restaurants, some open air during the Summer – one to three hours in duration. We run German cables, a Yamaha Stagepas 400 with an 80W Laney monitor and a Shure Beta 58a – for a reliable sound with high durability. And that is the main reason we bought the HPL Martin with the laminate neck. It was a bonus to get the Cash signature in this format.

The guitar doesn't move despite the fact we live on an island near France (hot) and it has a regular change in atmosphere day to night. String it well (stretch in) with the Martin Authentic Acoustic long life strings and FastFret on the nut – they don't move either. First set lasted 4 months without a break and minimal signs of wear (3 gigs a week). I check the truss rod regularly and it too has been solid – not a millimetre since my first set-up when I lowered the action and added a little relief (it was dead flat on delivery).
The guitar has been dropped twice and it bounced. It works in busy bars in confined spaces and inevitably it gets knocked. Really, this is a road warrior and just what we wanted after a Gibson J45 and Taylor that simply couldn't hack it. Both decent but the Taylor's top and side have split despite regular teak oil – that blows one of the comments below out… if you are playing live regularly, the Taylor doesn't like the sun and abusive atmospheres.

The Gibson is awesome for tone and looks but soft in the wood and finish… dents and scrapes abound and it's too good an instrument for road life so was retired after 3 months and is now used for home recording.

The black satin finish on the DX is a looker with the Cash branding and it cleans up easily (regularly subjected to beer and smoke). Tuners are Martin branded and solid, Martin X bracing and set M&T neck. The saddle is Tusq and nut is corian. The neck is relatively slim and easy to play. The body isn't as deep as the Gibson and overall it is a lot easier to handle for a young guy. I added the Cash 'star' from the gig bag above the fret board to make it ours.

The tone isn't the same as a full wood guitar, but it works for us – I accentuate the bite through the mixer dropping the bass and mids a touch. It works for rock, and I roll the warmth back in when he plays something more mellow like Radiohead – but even then, we like it clean. This is not Kenny Loggins round a camp fire in the Redwoods.
The guitar paid for itself after 3 gigs… and it's a keeper. If you are gigging regularly and want your acoustic to stand up with minimal (really minimal) maintenance and tuning stability – HPL with a laminate neck is ideal. And it is a Martin at the end of the day, so it has stage appeal. If you get that really special gig you can bring your Gibson out… or your Martin D35 at $4000.
I was blown away by the tone of this guitar but hearing other examples online don't sound anything like this. Curious to know how you're processing this sound. I liked it so much I ordered one to try.
What strings are on it?
It sounds exactly like my 100€ guitar bought 15 years ago on ebay
I have aquestion, please help me, i am thinking about buying the guitar but i have found in canada that there is one for 800 can dollars and there is another one for 6 thousand dollars, why the difference?
sounds like a few hundred dollar guitar, liar….
This is a cheap guitar. HPL body? Not even solid wood in a 700+ guitar.
Pixels!
What kind of strings are these
The universe has your back my friend????????????????????????
What custom options have been done to that specific guitar? I’m wanting to order and want that exact sound!!!!
Get your hearing checked. The DX is value for money but it doesn't sound anything like a $6,000 guitar or any of the high end Martins. Do a comparison with a real Martin D35 Johnny Cash commemorative model.
But does it sound good unplugged. I’m skeptical.
I’ve been looking at this and the black falcon rancher from Gretsch.
