3:01 Helix Native lead tone
3:20 I thought the Rockman might work for direct solutions
3:40 THAT 80s sound
4:00 the drive tones less inspiring?
4:48 the magic might be in the mix?
7:53 the Origin Effects Revival Drive – all analogue amp circuits in a pedal

Always love your vids. It does what it intends to do very well – in the mix Edge & Dist channels for Arena Rock, Aor & retrowave (ala Boston/Schultz tone, Leppard’s Hysteria, ZZTop’s Afterburner & The Midnight’s crunchier guitar sounds) with the clean “channels” working ace for a base to emulate/recreate Lukather, Landau & 80’s Pop/R&B.
For me, it’s a chorus always on situation (regardless of the mode selected), as the sound just spreads to a nice level of tonal girth & it shimmers greater when one adds delays & verb (like the Og headphone amp).
It’s marmite but I fudging love it for what I intend to use it for
????
(Vox Ice 9 OD + Rockman x100 + Hx Stomp into a Line 6 stereo Powercab).
Much love to your wonderful work
Considering I have one on back order and the date keeps getting pushed back, maybe so.

That tele though, damn.
People are tending to forget that the clean tones (especially sans chorus) are used a lot in R&B and funk. It’s more than a one trick pony you just have to be able to think beyond Boston.
You're right,… the clean 2 sound is very usable but the drive sounds are not the best. The " edge" ( lesser of the two drive sounds) is better if played at its most moderate setting into the power amp or effects return , or even the preamp input of a tube amp. Other than that I found the drive sounds quite nasal and plasticy sounding, and I had three of the different headphone amps, and still use ( for its clean sound and compressor) the half rackspace Rockman sustainor preamp which is a slightly more elaborate ,channel switching version of the headphone amps' functions ,with extra controls for tweaking the sound.
Chukka Kahn there John!
It is a fine pedal but $269 you do have many alternatives.
It’s a one trick pony, but it does its trick very well. If you play Boston, Def Leppard, etc. this is the easy button to that sound.
Great information thanks
Great, awesome playing!
It still is an amazing sounding pedal. Even on my iMac speakers it sound very spatial, with a lot of channel separation.
Needs chorus on. Always. And you must play Boston
I think what it was intended for does it well. John mentioned “niche”, perhaps.
I want it. Seems like a fun toy. Props for playing Ain’t Nobody.
It’s too expensive when you can dial in the tones on any boss multi fx or buy an old JHS rockbox which was actually used on hysteria
It needed to be £129 tops
I have a cheap as Blackstar headphone amp and it sounds 100x better than this. This thing sounds like the worst modeler you could ever buy and then selecting the muddiest default preset… or just like any Marshall CODE amp preset.
You say ots sounds small, I'm sure through two 2×12 cabs and two high headroom amps it would sound massive.
$150 used I'll bite
I think i think i think i think i think. Idiot
I like this channel, BUT – whaat!: "the drive tones are quite mid heavy"??? – ORIGINAL ROCKMAN GEAR (which this pedal replicates) WAS DESIGNED BY TOM SCHOLZ TO PRODUCE THE BOSTON1 (released in 76) GUITAR SOUND!!! Ya, the mids on that B1 album, and subsequent ones, are super CRANKED!!. A Rockman pedal that didn't do that, particularly on the drive modes, wouldn't be much good. It is very niche indeed, so not meant to be twisted to fit other applications.
– the Origin thingy sounded little like Rockman to my ear. Not close.
– running the pedal in stereo (via internal switch) is required to get the most authentic drive/chorus sounds out of it (Only delay needs to be added).

John, you totally missed the point my friend.
2:02 – lege.
I know its not supposed to be used in this way as its intended to be a direct solution, but how does it sound in front of an amp, or in front of an IR?
Tech 21 sansamp stuff also on a lot of records and analog. More so 90s sfuff i guess.
The original Rockman was specifically created to be “Boston in a box.” At the time it was not so easy for (especially younger) players to assemble a huge array of effects so Tom made this to make his tones very accessible. This pedal, intended as a near identical copy of the original, is not really trying to do anything more than “Boston in a box.” I think lack of versatility is kind of understood when you buy it.
lol not inspiring? listen to Boston's first album. its ment to fit easily into the mix.
If you produce retrowave music, this is a must have
If you are in a cover band playing Def Leppard et al is a great purchase.
it sounds like an 80's Rockman. was never appealing to me, but then i've never had nostalgia for the 80's direct-recording tones.. edit: i just checked the price.. 250 bucks?!?! that's an expensive price for nostalgia that'll be in the back of the closet next month
Yeah as an “80’s” pedal tone, it’s a faithful recreation. I was at the peak of my guitar playing and songwriting during the 80’s. I still live there. I haven’t stopped using the pedal since I got it, and it puts a huge smile on my face..
The original Rockman was never available in my country, so I had to improvise to get the tone.
A guy I knew brought one in from the States, and lost it, together with his arm, when he was attacked by a lion.
Yes
To me, the idea with this pedal is for guitar players to be able to play through THE tone of so, so many albums we are extremely fond of. It's kind of like some patches on a DX7, very classic and almost instruments of their own.
This is mainly made for that Boston Def Leppard tone
