???? Have We, Guitarists, Lost Our Grip? ????
In today’s video, we dive into the pressing issue of modern metal guitar tones. Have you ever noticed that many records sound strikingly similar? I was in that camp just five years ago, but the journey to achieving that elusive modern tone is more complex than it seems.
???? What We’ll Explore:
* The importance of finding the right sonic pocket for your riffs
* The pitfalls of relying solely on digital plugins and presets
* How guitar tone can make or break your metal tracks
Join me as I showcase an excerpt from my upcoming guitar course, where I’ll test five different ampsims through the same cabinet IR. We’ll dissect how each ampsim affects your tone and dynamics, and why dialing in your unique sound is crucial for standing out in the metal scene.

  • It's not even just the amp sum because everyone is following the same tutorials to get guitar tone, but also modern studio mixers are watching the same tutorials to mix the tones she especially all the instruments together. Yes, so many modern albums sound the same.

  • That's why I recorded my debut EP/demo with my "shitty" solid state amp, with a cheap mic, and guess what…it has character….

  • Interesting comparison mate! It's renown by now that cab is a major factor in the guitar sound and I would say the bass tone is also a great factor in finding the right guitars tone. Imho a great mix is achievable when you nailed great sounding drums and bass. It would be interesting a video on DI track treatment ????

  • IMHO… switch IR’s and stick to one amp head or modeler. I’m going to guess most of those IR’s you are using are V30’s and that’s why no matter what head you’re using it all sounds (basically) the same.

The average non musician listening through a modern device isn’t going to hear the “detail” you’re hearing in studio monitors. It’s not that important.

  • The solution, stop using the 5150 or the Rectifier, stop using V30, stop using the SM57 and then you'll get a unique sound.

  • Yeah I've been using the free audio assault Deimos amp sim for high gain material here lately. That amp sim is a straight up monster.

  • high gain amps aren't the thing that change the tone, to change the tone, change the speakers, the problem doesnt come from the amp sims

  • Hmmm Biggest issue is guitars generally suck 99% of the time these days. People just write the same chugging riff. It’s boring
Listen to Blizzard of Ozz, guitar sound is awful. Always was. But the guitar parts are excellent. Music now is produced excellent, but the craftsmanship of songs has long been lost. Amps or sims are not the issue.

  • i moved around TSE X50, Nalex Suite, Tonocracy, and even Neural DSP (somehow the free trial gets reset every once in a while), and i always ended up dialing in the same kind of tone lol.

  • The way I see it, they all sound the same because guitar players spend more time chasing tone and that quest gives them such tunnel vision they all end up sounding the same and, because they spent more time on that than on the song they were going to use that "perfect tone" on, they didn't polish the song and it sounds the same as the other 300 songs done by guitar players on the exact same quest. And then they blame their tools.

  • when I used the amped roots it didnt matter what pedal I tried in the input, it always sounded the same produced sound, it sounded good, but it didnt matter if it was a SD1 or a Chorus in the input, maybe it is my old zoom g2.1nu that I use as an interface. I want to upgrade to a 5150 iconic combo or a HX stomp, I have no idea which one I choose, I just wanted that modern 6505+ tones

  • No problem. Amp is about distortion, cab plus mic is abaut tone. Want new tone find new speakers, cabinets plus mics.

  • Ну да, динамик+мик определяют звучание гораздо сильнее чем усилитель

  • I think the issue is more about the fact that all these amp sims used are meant to mimmic a Peavey 5150. Even the EVH 5150 is a rip-off of the Peavey. EVH just brought it over with him. And I'd argue, the minor differences you hear here are the same differences you'd hear sending a head through the same cab with the mic in the same location. You'd hear very minor differences between the block letter, 6505, EVH 5150, etc. They can all be dialed in to sound like that. And really, all these amps owe their gratitude to the Soldano SLO.

  • Plenty of great bands had shit tone, and plenty of modern bands have great tone and nobody cares. Quit worrying about your tone and go write a song people want to hear.

  • Yup, preset based digital metal sucks. Start a band, put a mic on your instruments and press record.

  • I hate every modern metal mix and sounds though, i tried to listen to a recent black dalia murder cd in my car it sucked so bad, ultra compressed, everything squashed, no dynamics, after 20 seconds i had to stop, so yeah.

  • “Am I calling modern guitarists lazy? Hell no”

Well you’re not, but I am. I’d argue the amp is more like 10-20% of the tone, the cab/IR is far more important. I think the bigger issue is all the over-editing of both guitars and drums, making everything sound too clean/clinical. Stop time aligning everything. Make metal dirty again

  • I'm analog! You'll need my analog sounds for your sims. Sims are great for preforming artist and the recording artist. They have their place and job. New tone's come from you recording your own period ????????????

  • I disagree about guitars being the 80% of your mix.

The most important thing is the bass and the drums , especially the room mics.

once those are in place you are good to go.

    Reply
  • I've been testing and saying this for years now. Pick almost any modern amp sim and you are good to go, the cab/IR is what shapes the sound and has by far the biggest impact.

    Reply
  • Do people usually EQ/compress the DI information before applying the sim? I've never that before. Interesting.

    Reply
  • They all sound within 2-4% the same. Some sound slightly more sizzle, slightly more scooped, but the amp sims ran into the same IR all basically sound the same, there's no large shift in tonal color.

With real amps, this doesn't seem to be the case. If you connect 3 different real amps to the same cabinet, they all feel very different, maybe 15-20% difference, but when using amp sims, I don't know why but they sound pretty much alike.

Maybe there's something about a guitar amp working WITH a speaker TOGETHER that makes the special sauce, and having two separate pieces, like an IR and amp sim, that don't actually interact with each other just doesn't capture the differences between amps, like we see with a hardware only solution (amp and cab)

  • If you dial with your eq. It s quite the same…. IR make a huge difference compared to the AMPsim. Finally you Can have only the amproot and have a brutal tone if you have a proper IR.

  • Remamber when i try tiral bogren 5150 bundel and it was like… wait its all sound the same. So i chose one and stick with it. But overall i think with good ir, EQ after and maybe (depends of plugin) overdrive before its all sound similar like in the mix you cant tell diffrent. Personaly i only use bogren one knob and somitimes gojira plugin but in this age you can even make amazing sound with free stuff
