In this video, I make a compelling case for why the Gibson SG Standard is the best bang for the buck in the SG category and possibly among all currently available Gibson electric guitars.
From its iconic design to its versatile tone, the SG Standard has a lot to offer. I’ll cover:
Pros: Lightweight body, comfortable playability, powerful humbucker pickups, exceptional sustain, and a thick neck profile that provides a solid feel
Cons: Potential tuning stability issues and the distinctive neck shape, which might not suit everyone
Value: Why the SG Standard is an incredible deal both new and on the used market
Whether you’re a seasoned guitarist or just starting, the SG Standard provides a fantastic blend of quality, performance, and affordability. Tune in to find out why this classic guitar remains a top choice for players around the world.

As a drummer, I dont need an SG but I wanna fiddle with this nice slim design Gibson.
Your a hippie and you need to take a bath
I don’t know why, but I personally really can’t stand an SG.
Agree the pickup thing is a design flaw to me to.
There are ways to fix it with foam under the pickup to even it out parallel with the strings. But it takes some time to get it right.
But it can be done ,s shouldn't have to ,Gibson should have fixed that years ago..
But I like you enjoy the SG and yes a hybrid one with pickup rings and the standard neck would be great..
The only Gibson I would even consider. Great playing Brad!
Sounds and plays just like my 2001 sg400 second hand epiphone I paid 75 bux for badly neglected. But not the fat neck and grocers factory. I got lucky.
Brought it back nice. Blows people's minds how great it plays and sounds and my only stock guitar. Factory large pots and oddly very good stock pickups..
Great video Brad! Agree, the SG is a great deal used
Waited over 20 years to find my perfect SG. I got a new Standard. Fat neck. Came with 61 Burstbuckers, uncovered. Locking Grovers with keystones. Hard shell case. NO neck dive. The Piece De Resistance, finished in Pelham Blue. Added a pearloid guard. Think I’m going to add a pickup ring to the bridge to fix the pickup angle.
You know its good when you make Guitar Face…????
Hey Brad I think your right on about the SG. I recently was looking to buy one and was in a shop in CO. They had an 61 Reissue for 13-1400. They also had what was labeled an SG Standard for 975. However the Standard was mislabeled. It was a 61 reissue. For my hand size the thinner neck feels better. So i scooped it right up. Plays and sounds like a dream with those better pickups. Nice and light ….
Badbrad, you are truly one bad ass guitar player! I love your playing dude!
Hey Brad, you make any guitar sound, at worst, really good, and at best great. I find the recipe for great with the new SG Standard is:
Throw the classic 57/57+ pickups in that. It will sound like a million bucks, if you do. I have a like SG std, and those pickups
give it a real musically expressive voice. If it weren't for the neck dive, it'd be my favorite guitar to play all the time. Instead, I play my LP with Custombuckers.
Bad Brad's fingers danced on the Gibson SG, coaxing forth a sonic tapestry of raw emotion….loved ..loved this vibie tasty huge chunk of ear candy…its a dandy brother..and thars the dog-gone-truth
Hi Brad…I'm captivated by the SG's raw power and versatility. Its thin body offers unmatched comfort make it a joy to let er rip…!@!#!!
You missed on all pickups Standard 498T-490R and 61 57 Classic – 57classic +. My 2001 also has an ABR bridge.
Hey, Angus Young can't be wrong, correct? ???? SG's are badass and reasonable price wise.
Go on the used market and get them between 900 and 1200. I just paid a grand for a “mint” one from a mom n pop on reverb that was still in the original box. The market is crashing boys BUY NOW if you can! Oh and yes the Gibson is still miles ahead of the epiphone. Buy the Gibson used and cheap fellas!
Hey Brad! Interesting comment about the SG. Although I’ve always been a Gibson fan, and personally owned a 91 LP Studio Lite and a 2000’s DC LP special p90, I would never buy many amazing sounding SG’s or 335’s because of the neck heel strap button location, and how it hangs.
I say all that to say, I don’t have a lot of experience with that model in this video, but as far as the pickup tilt, one thing that might work is raising the polepieces on that pickup to compensate for the slant since they are on the side of the pickup that’s slanted away from the strings. In theory, I think it would get the magnetic field close enough to what a “level” pickup would achieve.
Good Morning Brad! Bought a Theodore instead of SG . SG's can really scream! Hope you've doing well in your new home ????????????????????❤. Nice Shades!
Excellent playing execution melody, wow!
Man, the sg sound is punchy a smooth perfect amount gain
Getting a great sound coming through great even on my phone
Bought epiphone 3yrs ago nice guitar flame top gold hardware coil tap, on sale and had 50$ credit amazing ax for 390$
love your high level intro with lots of rock jazzy lead in it….i would wonder hearing you playing 5-6 Les Pauls and SGs on that same music piece and what the impact might be…????????
Nice jam on the neck heavy batman beast.
I have had a few. That was the model that Les Paul refused to sanction. But here is a fact. Brad will make anything sound good. Even a Gold Foil Kent!!!
Or a Silvertone with a Guitar Case Amp. I found the SG fatiguing with a long gig. My favorites were/are the Les Paul Models and Telecasters. Hate Strats!!!
For some reason I really enjoyed Les Paul Specials with P90s. I have a custom LP Special now with GFS PAFs. For some reason that is what I pick up
all the time. I only pull out the Les Paul Customs every now and then. And yes I have a Strat. Blahhh!!! For a Fender I use a Nashville B-Bender Telecaster!!!
Regardless: Brad is a PRO !!!! And has mastered the most difficult thing to do with a guitar. Which is "Tune It!!!!" Walsh carved that in stone!!!!
