  • I just got a bottom of the line Yamaha TRBX174. Love it. $300 CDN. My only very small quibble is that the fret ends are a bit rough but the shop offers a free tune-up with new guitars, so it was really a no brainer. No headaches either lol

  • Yamaha basses are goated. The best kept secret in music. After playing and getting started on TRBX3*/6* ones, fender precision bass feels clunky and old fashioned.

  • Lol just found your channel and recommended a BB series amp. Now I find you just made a video about them. I have a BB234 and I love it. I will say if you want to mod it, Yamaha has proprietary parts so if you want to mod it good luck.

  • I have been playing Yamaha acoustic guitars for years, they are great instruments! I definitely want to get a Yamaha BB bass because they are great basses and i'm a huge Peter Hook fan.

  • Maybe not a "classic" player, but Amos Heller is always one of the first people I think of when I think of the Broad Bass (5-string specifically). I'd love to see them bring back the blade magnets and metallic pickup surrounds but I understand that they might be trying to dip into the more traditional market. The 40mm nut width is very cool because oddly enough that's a bit hard to find, most 4s are either 38mm or 42mm. The black headstocks look very cool. The main difference I noticed between the two models is how much clearer the Pro model is with the tone rolled completely off. The bass seems to have a nice balance between the neck and bridge which is my main gripe with PJs in general, but it's unfortunately hard to fully tell when there's no bridge pickup demo on this video. Have tried a BB with the single coil J-style pickups in soapbar sized casings, and those were pretty balanced, but that was a five-string, active, and a completely different layout.

  • Never worth 4 times the Price of the cheaper one….but the old BB‘s are all way better than the new series.

  • Got a BB235 last year July. I also have a considerably more expensive G&L L2500 Tribute. My engineer prefers the BB235. I love both, but the BB is definitely lighter and sounds excellent in a mix. A solid workhorse.

  • On the guitar side, so many prominent players have used a Pacifica at some point because it fit their price point, but overperformed more expensive American equivalents. The fact that the bass lines also over performed is not surprising.

  • I have a BB234 that I have made just a couple modifications to and it has become my go to bass, I love my BB234

  • aw man I LOVE yamaha basses! So happy that this comparison exists. If I was stuck on an island full of gigs to play across several genres, I would bring a broadbass. BBP34 if I had the budget, BB234 if I also had to eat

  • I absolutely love my BBP35. I have Fenders, custom made basses, G&L, Stingray, etc…and my BB is my go to bass on most gigs.

  • These two basses look rather great yes but if you go back a few years you will encounter the 414, 614, 415 and 615. These are older but freaking beastly BBs from the early 2000s and come in active or passive flavours of 4 or 5 string and holy hell they are wicked. Matching headstocks, metal surrounds on the pickups that make them stand out, alas no stock scratch plates (unless you go to the 424x models but you lose the matching headstocks) and they’re hard to find but very much worth the money. You’ll be looking around the £200-£300 mark which is cheaper than a new Squier. The orange one in particular looks freaking amazing and I’m lucky enough to have the 414 in that colour. Wholly recommend these amazing basses.

  • I have the BB 434 which has the 6 bolt neck and angled string thru body. An absolute joy to play. I’d have had to pay double for a Fender equivalent.

  • BB234 sounds about ten times better than the other one. To my ears and tastes, obviously. What an excellent value.

  • I’m usually not a fan of “signature” instruments, but if Yamaha made a James Lomenzo model I would buy it in a second.

  • i have a BB234 Natural and a 434 black Maple neck and the 234 is soooo much better than the 434 , very strange …. i have also a 435 dark green and this one is teh best of the three

  • Great video….! (As usual) I love Yamaha Basses although I don't have one now. I Played the bb 435 a few years ago and it sounded great. Maybe in the future I'll try to grab one of these….!!!!

  • I just got back from a guitar store, tried many different basses, mainly P's and then I tried the BBP34, felt amazing! I've been interested in the BB series for a while and recently tried the BB434, which didn't meet my expectations, perhaps due to poor setup. The BBP34 is on another level, even compared to much more expensive American-made bass guitars. I believe players would consider these basses more if they offered a wider range of interesting color options for the body and headstock.

  • BB sounds pretty good, for slapping it sounds fat, it's not a Fender sound.
Sometimes what sound best played alone does not cut in the mix, this bass cuts like a P-bass so it's a good bass.
A short scale is a superior bass to me, just does everything better. Faster, lighter, bassier.

I mean a 34 inch neck, now slide from F on 1st up to the 15th fret, takes a while don't it ?.
Now…slide back and tell me this does not take a while. This is what I mean by faster.
Faster to just learn that, forget what people say about the looks.
This is why I just ordered this one of a kind, short scale active Jazz bass, it's based a Wal pretty much.
It's like let's go bass people, popular people are just losers now, who wants to be popular anymore ?.
What do you gain from that ?.

  • Not going to lie. I like the sounds of the inexpensive model better. Didn't dislike the other model just preferred the tones of the 234. Love the look of the 34 though.

  • I’ve been playing bass for almost 40 years and haven’t had a chance to ever play a Yamaha as well as see one in the wild. I’ve only heard great things about them and would love to check one out. Also almost every Japanese bass I’ve ever touched has been a keeper!

  • i mean – prove me wrong with a time code, but 20 minutes of great review but not a single second of the bridge pickup? 😀

  • the BB went from high quality low price to high quality high price due to currency. Add in gobs of competition and they now get less love, although still love nonethess. I think they are pigeonholed as 80s basses, but i don’t think thats fair.

  • People try fsodferent basses etc but the story is majority will always come back to Fender 🙂

  • Need to mention that BB basses are great mod platforms, as Fender fit parts will also work on the Yamaha.
The BB 430 series gives you the same sculpted neck joint, through body stringing and 6-bolt fixing as the BBP.

  • Interesting; the differences between the basses seemed more apparent in the amp sim than DI (to my ears). Tried a BB434 just over a year ago and liked it but didn't love it. Neck felt decent and pickups seemed quite "P-dominant", which is quite common among PJs (especially cheaper ones).

  • Wish they still made the BB714BS, the Billy Sheehan model with a big humbucker against the heel of the neck.

  • I owned a BB234 in natural finish with a Set of an Aguilar PB Pickup and a SD JB Pickup. The electronic was changed to a "Richter" Electronic as well as a fatter Bridge. A Dream to play and I regret it to this day, that I sold it..

  • I recently finally got to try out a few BBs. They’re nice, but not for me. The nut spacing is too tight for my tastes. My hand started cramping.

  • Great video my friend. I hv a 435 and it's so fantastic. Btw, what kind of amp sim that you use in this video? Thank you for any reply ????

  • I gigged a BB435 all of last year and it has been a beast for me. Did swap the tuners for Hipshots and pickups for Nordstrands but honestly it was really great stock
