Manhattan is also my favorite EJ tune! Wonderful playing here.
On a seasonal note, have you, by chance, heard Eric's version of The First Nowell from the Merry Axemas album from the late 90s? It's stunning. I think you'd love it. Also, Robin Trower does a haunting version of O Little Town of Bethlehem from the second Merry Axemas. Always gives me goosebumps.
brilliant stuff mate! Thanks for the shoutout too ????
John is such a reflection of us guitarists. He sold all of his mesas and went hard on modelers. Now he has a bunch of amps again and plays gigs with amps
Fantastic ! Pls share your tone secret too!
Yesss ! Amazing playing and beautiful sound ????????????
The G3 version of Manhattan is my all-time favorite guitar performance. The album came out when I was in my early 20s, and when the DVD came out a few years later, I can't even tell you how many times I watched Eric's performance of that song. I always liked him the most because he wasn't flashy–just kept his head down and played earnestly, with solid technique and masterful composition and arrangement. Pure class.
I have always wished Eric would compose more jazz fusion songs like that. I would love to have a whole album in that style. But it never happened, as his usual style is more on the rock and blues side with a dash of neoclassical. I used to think as he got older he would veer more and more into jazz/fusion, but that never really happened either. He did play some jazz, but it was more of something he did on the side and not his main focus as an artist.
Wow, wicked playing brother!
How many people bought that VHS for Vai and Satriani only to realise Eric was the real man?
Is that PRS solid plastic or 2 piece plastic?….sounds like it might need maintenance….
Back in ‘96 I had this track on repeat during my commute. Didn’t know much about jazz guitar at that time but that lick definitely set off alarm bells to my rock/blues/pop ears
Love this kind of content. Always going to find something to add to the bag.
I dunno why but I always think of the 1940's streets of new york at night when I hear that dominant sound. That and minor chords with a major 7th is NYC af. Just sayin.
The thing that made all the melodic minor stuff click was finding where the augmented triad is in whatever application of the scale I'm using it in.
I’d love to see another lick lesson on EJs trail of tears from Austin city limits.
How in the world do you get that pad to keep playin underneath?!
That is some seriously tasty playing on the intro!!
I bet this guy is such a fan of himself he autographs his own guitars.
I knew exactly which lick it was even before hearing you play. Another good example of a tune using this scale would be "Perrier Citron" by Uzeb
i remember watching G3 etc and being distracted by vai and satch. Never really caring about Eric. I now realise much later that Eric's stuff is way harder to play. some of it is bonkers.
made for gamboying. must be an actual gamboy one.
Like, life? Mr Cordy, really? 😀
Fantastic
EJ = Hero
Manhattan is such a great tune. So many great licks and techniques throughout. Really shows Eric’s range of abilities. Then you go back and listen to the bass riffs from the live version and the drums, just a top notch performance.
listen to freddie king "same old blues" you'll hear that lick forward and backward. i'll give you a head start. the lick starts sliding up to the 5th fret on the high E. very cool turnaround.
Out of curiosity John, did you ever go down the Troy Grady road with all the fancy pick slanting stuff? I notice you adapt a lot of EJ stuff for the legato style. Sound's stellar.

I can smell the smoldering fire from here, smoking hot playing John.
thank you this is great
My first exposure to Eric Johnson was the G3 concert on VHS. I must have bought it in '98 or '99, time is getting a bit blurry now. I soon went out and bought Venus Isle and then ah via musicom.
First….to get to listen to another great guitar playing example that i could listen to all day! Thanks for all you do!
