It’s finally here! Some of you have probably noticed my lack of videos these last few months and it’s all because of this video. I have been totally obsessing over Mike’s guitar tone on Morning View and trying to piece together all the elements that I think went into crafting this guitar sound.
In this video, I break down everything you’ll need to recreate Mike’s iconic guitar tone from the wonderful Incubus album, Morning View.
So grab a drink and settle in for this one, I hope you enjoy going on this tone journey with me!

nailed it
Nu Metal is the best era in music, anyone that argues is old. So many iconic bands from that time period KoRn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Incubus, System Of A Down, Slipknot, Disturbed, Coal Chamber, Static -X, Linkin Park, Sevendust, Cold, Deadsy, etc, alot I'm forgetting as well
Hi Nick,
Thanks a lot for all your very interesting videos and this one in particular !
I play the guitar in an Incubus cover band, so all this information is really a gift for me.
I don’t use the Tremoverb combo (hard to find, too heavy without roadie) but I use a Rectoverb combo instead. It makes the job quite well. On the distortion channel, I confirm that it is not possible to find Mike’s sound with the Modern mode. However, with the Vintage mode (cf the Blues mode on the Tremoverb ?), yes you find all theses mids and this rich distortion !
Maybe a last information you could add in your video, an element that impacts the sound : I think that Mike was using a very heavy gauge (till 13-56 ?) for his strings in the early Incubus years. That is why he had some surgery on his left hand in 2007. I wouldn’t be surprised that such strings were used on his hollow body PRS…

in your comparison i hear a bit of phaser in the background of mikes guitar tone (some of the distorted/overdriven ones). is this maybe an overdubbed guitar with phase effect on it?
I was born April 26th 1990 but i had lots of older brothers an sisters and two of my older (much older like out of the house old lol) brothers played guitar. So i got exposed to and fell in love with good music much much earlier thany peers. I also started playing guitar at 8 when i got the Sears catalog nylon string Harmony guitar id begged my dad for since July of that year lol. Anyways i got into Incubus shortly after the release of Make Yourself when i i "borrowed" without permission the album from my sister who soon found out and took it back so I bought my own copy of Make Yourself and Science shortly after. I have very very fond memories of listening to Make Yourself in my room at night (with my green incandescent light bulb in my room casting a green glow over my posters on the walls). I was always trying to get my friends to listen to music back then but their idea of good music was whatever "Kiss FM" or the Disney radio station played lol. Luckily by the time Morning View came out i had a handful of friends who had finally discovered good music so i could share my favorite songs and bands with them and even have them recommend good music to me. The 90s was such a great time to grow up and i think we are so fucking lucky to have gotten to have a childhood pre widespread internet and social media adoption.
have you done certain shade of green?
Liked the video before watching the video. All love for Incubus ????????
What a journey to one of the best guitar tones in rock music history.
Nick you’re awesome! Keep on rocking brother!????????????
Gold Great Guitar.
Wth you really did a PHD on Mike’s tone
Very cool! I believe Mike will be interviewed on this channel one of these days. The MV tones really are some of the best from Incubus.
This is too much for me????
Congratulations for the video Nick!!!
Is a new cover coming Next?
This tone takes me back! Great video, Nick!

I didn’t know thin Seth Rogen got into gear and creates YouTube content.
Epic video dude!! Thanks for all the info! ????????
I’m a big fan of incubus and more importantly Mike and his playing style so much so that I too bought a PRS. I really enjoyed you digging into the details of each part of his tone because each piece is arguably just as important. Loved the video thanks for sharing!
Let’s goo!! You’re the best Nick!
What are the delay settings for Wish You Were Here?
Surgical research and analysis here with the impulse responses nice job man????????
One of the best albums ever written
Incredible work Nick. Thank you for doing this!
Man of great taste. Brew made in 87.
Incredible attention to detail. Blown away by your dedication to chasing, in my opinion, one of the most underrated sounds from one of the most underrated guitarists. From one massive incubus fan to another, thank you for this!
Amazing production and information! – Keep going subscribed!
Great video mate, Mike is the reason I bought a HB2 and a Mesa Rectoverb. Great tones from him and yours are sensational as well.
Loved this. Great work
Great video mate thanks a lot for making it
