Each humbucker has it’s own three way switch for series/split/parallel operation. The tone knob is a push/pull to active both pickups out of phase with each other, and the volume knob is a push/pull that switches between both pickups together in parallel or series.

  • While it is not 42 different tones, the Freeway switch doubles the number of pickups that are "on" at one time…allowing those parallel/serial options, all three pickups selected at once, or the neck & bridge picup. Plus, there are now variable treble bleed circuits that allow adjusting the amount of bleed at will, with an additional pot. The resistance of the now generally standard 250kΩ pots can be approximately doubled with a simple resistor in a series with the tone control. If the wiring is changed so one tone controls the bridge pickup & the other controls neck & middle, that resistor can be added to that latter pot, increasing the brightness of 2 of the pickups, but not the bridge pickup which is usually already brighter than the other 2 pickups.

  • Here's some things I would love to see available for mounting within the body of a guitar, rather than as pedals, etc:
    1. A speaker & amp for practice purposes. It can be very small as 3 watts would be more than enough, and some very tine speakers have wide frequency response.
    2. A circuit & switch that allows the guitar to simulate a 12-string…now available in a pedal, and guite authentic sounding.
    3. A circuit that will produce a bass tone (an octave below the E & A strings) when those two strings are played.

    With modern miniature components, all of this could fit within a 2nd cavity to be located under a std Strat pick-quard & no larger than the standard Strat controls cavity.

  • It's awesome enough that you demoed all 42 sounds but the fact that you managed to edit it together to sound like one long funky jam is top-notch! KUDOS – I am definitely inspired to go look at the diagram now

    Challenge, could you do even more by adding a single coil in the middle position. I've got a HSH in queue and I'm thinking about giving such an idea a go.

  • Not every mod possible. You could add a no load blend tone pot to adjust the amount of blending of the neck pickup, split coil, to the bridge humbucker pickup for a unique tone. See Jay Leonard J channel on youtube video, or Six strings supplies video on the blend tone mod.

  • I've seen one guy claim to have 47 d selectable options. But I'm yet to see him demo it. For real tho, to me it's just too much to try to recall in the moment. I appreciate your video and it was great hearing all the different tones and what the different combinations do. It's too much to go through but would be nice to hear each tone on clean and then dirty too tho . That's 84 times playing that riff…

  • You should try half out of phase (out of phase, but with one pickup in series with a capacitor to block the low end), half humbucker (instead of using the humbucker as a single coil, sometimes one coil is put in parallel with a capacitor. In effect, you get the highs of a single coil with the lows of both in series. It's generally less thin and more versatile than just one coil of a humbucker), and lastly, whenever I put two pickups in series, I like to put my tone pot between the two pickups (the same idea as putting a capacitor between the coils of a humbucker, but acting on the two separate pickups instead. Generally, I find two pickups in series to be great sounding but a bit too fat sounding to make me want to roll down the terrible with the tone pot, having the tone between the pickups, you can get the treble from one pickup and low end from both in series, also a great feature to have with series out of phase, similar idea to half out of phase but in reverse).

    On my tele type guitar, I've got a five way switch and a mess of other switches to get the tones I want. I'm planning to redo it and simplify the controls with the following:
    A freeway 6 position tele switch that handles all the series, parallel, in phase out of phase, and single pickup options. Then I'll have a push push tone pot that'll either put the tone pot in parallel to the neck or bridge pickup. That will give me a tone bypassed or normal tone option for either single pickup, normal tone for both parallel settings, and a tone pot acting on just the neck or just the bridge when they're in series. Then I'm putting a dpdt on-on-on switch as a bass cut for either the neck pickup, bridge pickup, or both (for parallel out of phase, this will get you the half out of phase tone. In series it'll just give you a base cut on the entire circuit, normal bass cut on single pickups, and the treble of one with full range of the other when using them in parallel)

  • My ‘83 Washburn Force 2 has been a work in progress for a while. It was HH like yours. I removed the original pick guard and electronics and made a new pick guard from scratch. 2 newer Washburn Humbuckers were installed and a middle single coil added by routing the guitar and pick guard. 2 DPDT switches on/off/on for the HB’s. Neck pup is full H or single coil. Bridge is in or out of phase. On/off push button for Texas style mid pup. Separate vol. control for each with treble bleeds blends pups in any combination. Stacked vol. knobs keep it simple. Tone for mid and bridge. 15 distinct tones with switches. Blending the out out of phase pup with vol. gives some really nice tones. Switches and knob layout is user friendly and easy to master. Has a Washburn 2000 trem and locking nut. Plays like expensive boutique model. $300 invested total.

  • You could have added a piezo pickup, a middle single pickup and a rhythm circuit for a good 100+ tonal options

    You can also add separate volume and tone knobs for each giving you 1 more tone option ( the woman tone)

  • Hi i just became patreon and i confuse about the wiring. Is the wiring on pot all is dpdt? Saw a lot of dpdt on that scheme but just 2 swicth on the guitar that not have the knob. Can you give me information which the switch dpdt and which pot dpdt?

    i have a s+s+h strat which can potentially give me even more options
    i figured i had m+b out of phase, which sounded weak and noisy. so i put a switch inside the cavity so i could change the wiring back if i need to

  • Great testcase 😉 . Looking for a top 4/5 sounds to get out of a 1 humbucker guitar. Preferably with a 4 or 5-way rotary switch, so I'll only have to drill one round hole in my guitar… Feel free to throw in some suggestions.

  • Ever seen how the MJ Mastercaster mini switch to go full bridge HB? From what I read it shuts off all losing power and go straight to the bridge HB to give the EVH tone. Ever seen that wiring before for a HHH or HSH?
