English rock bands of the 60s and 70s were influenced by blues and American rock and roll, but also much older music like this.

Hey Rick, I’m also a big John Dowland and of course Julian Bream fan. So sad that he’s not with us anymore! One of my favourite Dowland tunes is My Lord Willoughby’s Welcome, played by Bream on one of his albums. This is a lute duet and the harmonies are beautiful! Take a listen!
Many British Rock icons got their inspiration from Renaissance music like The Who,Genesis later Peter Gabriel,Mike Oldfield, Jethro Tull etc.
The singer is Robert Tear: a superb English tenor with an ease of tone that is unsurpassed.

When I was a kid, Back in Scotland, my uncle Tommy could play every string instrument, he had a Lute, I sat on it and fell right through it, It was trashed, I got a hiding from my Mom, My uncle was devastated,
I can see the cast of Monty Python, “Brave sir robin…”. Almost has a Scarborough Fair kind of vibe. The dude playing with Sting is the guy from the movie where he carried the cylinder around with the cow killer device. He flipped the quarter with gas station owner, heads or tails, don’t put it in the till, it’s your lucky quarter. That guy is intense but plays a mean Lute.

I enjoyed that very much Rick. I have those recordings and Videos. I hav played The Earl of Essex' Galliard on solo guitar and Can She Excuse My Wrongs with a singer. Queen Elizabeth's Galliard too. There's a connection. Diana Poulton presents the case that the lyrics for Can She Excuse were actually written by The Earl of Essex for Queen Elizabeth.
I think this is why I love the Sandy Denny era of Fairport Convention. I think she was heavily influenced br renaissance music.

This is a great video. I went looking for Sting’s lute songs and John Dowland afterwards and found a wealth of great new sounds.

This is why I love the piano rolls that Claud Debussey banged out so long ago. We get the actual intended inflections the peice was intended to have.
Be interesting to hear it in altered pitches. Just imagine if they played it 2/3rds of a pitch lower.
