  • Killlllin. Rainey is the baddest. Barney great too. Ive never really seen anyone play these incredible bass parts…ive always focused on the guitar, studying learning recording a ton of dan tunes note for note just to learn all the amazing arrangements but goddamn these bass parts are insanely great.

  • Julia Hofer – Great personality, super talent, lots of fun, and the exact right amount of stank face! 3:28, 4:39, Am I right? Thank you Julia!!! Say hi to Hans for me.

  • Great playing. It's all about the feel. Chuck Rainey's creativity is quite amazing and probably missed by most listeners because it fits the music perectly.

As much as I respect Marcus Miller as a great bassist with many excellent album tracks like David Sanborn's Run For Cover, I don't care for this tendency to play bass as a lead instrument too often. Bass has a role to play, like drums in generating the pulse and feel of the song, not the melody line. There are a few exceptions, but I feel what I'm trying to express is generally right.

  • You inspired me to dust off my old Bass. Here is a way of looking at any song and learning it faster. Every song has four states, spiritual, visual, auditory and emotional or feeling/ kinesthetic. When you learn a new song listen for these four states and think about how they applied to the song and total performance. Your feeling, time and left hand technique are great, it will be easy for you to master all four of these states once you see and hear what I'm trying to show you. Watch a few YouTube videos with a goal of finding all four of these states in the music you love to play. Hint, it's not just playing bass lines it's also how a body moves, the words they use to communicate Bliss with the audience.

  • It was such a rush for me on a hot night in 1981, I transcribed 'Deacon Blues' for my nine piece horn band. I'll remember it forever. As for you, your energy an d technical chops are so great. I love hearing how amazing these historic bass parts are.

  • What wonderful playing. I enjoyed listening to you present it more than even the originals. You can really dance with the bass and with great tone too! Wow! Thanks for the video.

  • Julia, what a great way to explain the bass lines! You play deliciously. I can feel your feeling for the notes you play. I play the bass too. Great job!

  • Julia You are an absolute master ….. just love love love and so respect your work !!
I listened to a YT video interview with Becker & Fagan talking about Peg & included were Raineys comments about his contribution to the song …. Becker & Fagan insisted that Peg should be played just as beautifully as you have played it ….. however Rainey said …that song HAS to be played by slap ….. so I turned my chair away from them and slapped the song ….. it stayed on the cut !!!
He slapped it so subtlety….it is yet another brilliant performance by CR !!!

  • Thank you for shining a light on these great songs, awesome playing! For me, they are all good, but it’s hard to go past ‘Josie’

  • Steely Dan has been one of my favorite bands of all times. I never made the connection of Chuck Rainey to my favorite SD tracks. I knew of his vibe from playing with Aretha and Marvin (and of course Quincy). Chuck Rainey is a boss!

  • I wonder if Steely Dan did the same thing with bass lines they did with guitar breaks–bring in different session players to play the break or line and then picked the one they liked best?

  • It's hard to pick just one. BTW it's always enjoyable to watch a talented musician ply their craft. All the best, M.

  • Steely Dan has always been my favorite! I always wished that the one and only Carol Kaye could've done some tunes with them! Her jazz expertise would've been awesome!

  • Love me some Steely Dan! I love watching you play. You look like enjoy being the zone. My favorite are Deacon Blues and Do It Again. I remember loving Deacon Blues as a 10 year old. Little did I know that 13 years later i would become an Alabama fan!

  • I would like to hear a whole album of Steely Dan featuring the bass line as you have done. This was awesome. The last one had a Jamiroquai sound to it – figures, played by a different era .

  • Hi Julia, a million thanks for dismantling the bass lines of these fantastic Steely Dan songs. If I had a free wish: Could you do the same with yet another Steely Dan song: Goucho. As far as I know it was Walter Becker who played the bass on that recording. Keep up! Thanks again.

  • I never saw Steely Dan live, but in 1978 I was Steve Gadd live (he was in the tour band of Chick Corea). One of my absolute favorite bands ever, just really from the start in 1972 with Do it again, later on the awesome AJA album and much more. I just simply love this kind of sound mastermind Donald Fagen composed……with outstanding session musicians, drummer, bass player, guitarists etc.
