What question would you like us to answer in FAQ Friday? For this week’s FAQ Friday, we had the incredible privilege of sitting down with the multi-Grammy-winning engineer, Darrell Thorp! With years of experience working with some of the biggest names in music, Darrell shared his insights and expertise by answering four key questions submitted by our community. He tackled topics like controlling drum ringing, addressing artist performance challenges, knowing when a mix is finished, and navigating client recalls and feedback. Darrell’s advice is packed with practical tips and real-world wisdom—let’s dive in!
Please add time stamps 😉
Thanks ????
This is exactly how I operate. I thought I was alone. Well, in my little town I am, but,… it is what it is.
10 recall's per song is a lot in my opinion. I have definitely done songs with 14 recalls, but my standard mixing packages offer three after the initial mix. Maybe I'll double my rate and include 10 revisions on the mix. Lol???????? great insight Daryl! HAPPY 2025 and go Lauten!
Wow, THE Darrell doing FAQ Friday! Awesome! PRODUCE LIKE A PRO & Darrell ????????????
???? Another good one
Excellent info — Darrell is awesome. Thanks Warren.
10 recalls??? TEN!!! Right there is yet another reason I couldn't be a pro mix engineer. By the 3rd recall I'd be thinking: '… Surely you hired me to mix because of my previous work. Why are you now questioning my trademark sounds?' I know the 'client-is-king' philosophy is helpful for future work but why would you hire Salvador Dali to paint your front room if what you really want is Da Vinci?
The ‘Artist’ wanting to sing “on a 58” seems like a reasonable enough request… until you have to face trying to fit a Chevrolet Bel Air Impala into the vocal booth.
Love Darrell thank you for the video
One of the things in a session that could potentially irritate me as an artist is the "bored to death" and slightly condescending attitude this guy shows. He comes across like "Uh, here we go again, another overly sensitive artist soul."
Boz Digital Gatey Watey is great. You can gate based on frequency.
Great point on actually detailing what steps you took on a mix recall, not in a patronising way, just: here’s what I did, what do you think. I had a drummer who gave me feedback saying his kick was too “puffy”, a wee back and forth for a bit and I eventually said I need a few other words than puffy, and if you can point me in the direction of a reference, that would be great. He just wanted a slightly clickier sound in the end, but it was a struggle to get that description out of him
Yesss Darrell’s the man
I just enjoy doing it so it never feels tough, just involved.
In response to the 1st question: Keep in mind – a well tuned set of drums WILL resonate in sympathy to adjacent drums being played (esp if loudly). BUT, keep in mind – if you are ONLY hearing this in SOLO, listen again with the drums in the mix, if it isn't perceptible or distracting, don't sweat it!! All Pro level recordings have bleed/ leakage in a mic'd up kit. It is not an electronic kit or samples. BUT, it could be a situation where the mic should be moved, or the gain / compression should be addressed. Also – as you mentioned cymbals being affected – when drums are attached to cymbal stands, that can create a problem; or toms/ cymbals mounted to Kick Drum – fine for live – potential problem in sessions!! I am a live/session drummer and studio/ live sound engineer. Hope this helps!! ????????????????
I gotta listen to this ,,I'm nuts lol
My technique for handling tough sessions is to use a mic stand as a weapon. It really works wonders. One strategic hit at the beginning will get the talent's undivided attention. Cheers
