Tubesteader ROY: Tube-Powered “Top Boost” Gain Pedal [Front Of Amp Demo]
Find out more about this pedal here: https://tubesteader.com/products/roy
Please note: the ROY can also be used to add a Voxy flavour to IR software, power amplifiers and FX loop returns. However (because I don’t own any of that equipment!) this video will focus on its capabilities as a front-of-amp overdrive pedal – an application where it sounds utterly fantastic!
Olly at Tubesteader has quickly built a reputation for designing some of the finest tube-based pedals on the market – and already has compact recreations of the Dumble ODS, Orange Rockerverb, Fender Tweed Champ, and Magnatone Super 59 in his lineup….and they’re all wonderful. And now, he’s turned his hand to distilling another legendary amplifier down into this format.
Enter the ROY…Tubesteader’s take on the legendary ‘Top Boost’ Vox AC30 circuit that so many players have found their voice with over the years. With a high voltage-running 12AX7 tube at its heart, there’s also a transistor on the front end that pushes the signal harder into the glassware. As well as giving a little more gain, this also has the effect of creating the spongy feel under the fingers that only really comes from a tube running flat out.
The ROY has two sides, with independent gain & volume controls for each, and a shared two-band EQ. This EQ somewhat pivots around the midrange – allowing you to create mid-pushed & mid-scooped tones despite not having a mid band. You also get the Tone Cut control mounted on the top of the pedal, which is worth its weight in gold when dialling in gainy tones….if there’s ever a hint of harshness, just turn this down until it goes away. Cool, eh?

How does it go with a clean boost in front? That's a big thing for vox sounds.
Nice one! Looks like my kinda pedal – thanks for fun overview ????????
Amazing they got so much circuitry into such a compact package! Nice playing as always. Really love your videos!
I think there’s something wrong with your Les Paul’s Treble pickup. To my ear it has a very distinct frequency spike somewhere in the mid-high end that makes it incredibly whistle-sounding. I’m not trying to be rude, it’s just what I am hearing.
The frequency balancing goes back to sounding completely fine when you switch it completely off and on to the Rhythm pickup.
Take whatever you wish from this unsolicited opinion about the guitar. The playing is great though!
(and thanks for your heads up on the Williamson Tone Benders . From watching your video I personally ordered a MKI for myself to ship all the way over to St. Paul, MN. I would never have even HEARD of his excellent work and value if I wasn’t subscribed to your channel)
Sounds great.
A BJFE EGDM has been my #1 for 14+ years. This is tempting ????

Hello Joe, sounds stellar with the Tele!
The company make several pedals but this is the best they have made. That said I only yesterday bought a Friedman IR-D which uses 2 tubes and has 2 channels just for a start. It cost me only $88.00 USD more than this pedal.
Great opening track Joe! That sound totally passes the Pub Test! ????????????✨????
Today is my birthday and I am a Vox obsessive, putting it mildly. This is a treat! Thanks Joe!
